2005 easily

Not only do you watch your team lose every single week, but the likelihood that this may be the last season your team ever plays also lingers in your mind.

Just a miserable feeling

What was so bad about 2005 is that it wasn't a horrible team. They just played awful.

07? anyone saying 07 is clueless sorry

fans wearing bags over their heads trumps even Katrina

What you fail to realize is that in the Aints days everyone knew we sucked and knew nothing else. In 07 we had just come off the NFC championship game and were pumped to do great things and came out just getting our asses handed to us with the same team that just went to the NFC title game. I'd much rather know that my team was going to be crap than expect them to be a contender and have them play like crap.

And in NO WAY, shape, or for were the older days worse than the Katrina year. We might have sucked but it was still our team, 05 was the most real chance we ever had of losing the team....but go ahead and brag about how much more of a fan you are since you're older if it helps.

What you fail to realize is that in '79 we reached .500 for the first time in Saints history, Archie Manning was the NFC Offensive MVP, and the Saints had five players in the Pro Bowl; Manning, RB Chuck Muncie, WR Wes Chandler, TE Hank Childs, and S Tommy Meyers. All of whostarred in the game. Meyers had a key interception and Manning led a game-winning drive that included catches by Chandler and Childs and Muncie won MVP.
Expectations for the 1980 season were deservedly high. The first game was a close loss to San Francisco, then in the second game we got blown out by Chicago. Things just snowballed the rest of the way. The low point was a Monday night game against San Francisco where we blew a 35-7 halftime lead. (I was there, we couldn't get a first down in the second half to save our lives.)
That was unquestionably the worst season ever.

If you lived in New Orleans, how the Saints played was one of the last things you gave a frick about. Sure, you were concerned about losing the franchise, but for the most part you had a lot more important things to worry about.

Edited because I had called you a bad word.

the 2005 Katrina season

If your really think it through, this one was the worst. shite I couldn't get into my house until October and the Saints were already stinking up the field and playing like zombies in Baton Rouge, and the owner was preparing to abandon New Orleans.

1967 NFL New Orleans Saints 3-11

We were a National punch line used by coaches and comedians alike. A joke of a team never meant for anything other than learning fodder for what not to do to be succesful in the NFL. "The lovable losers."

How bad was it to be a fan?

After the 79 8-8 season and celebrating our 1st non losing season I realized just how bad our situation as a team and fan base was that you could celebrate such mediocrity.

So sad looking back on it.

These now are the salad days indeed.

Having watched the Saints from day 1 – and in the stands for many of those games, I believe that you should rephrase your question. “Which group of four consecutive years was the worst for the Saints?”

any list of "worst of" about the Saints is gonna require a lotta review and argument. There is the whole Black Ages of history to take in.

So, a few cents...

There's worst in different ways...

05 was very black with the whole Katrina thing, the team (after some decent year) imploding, and talk of relocation. Overall emotion perhaps the worst.

80 gets point in actual performance. They started 0-14 As pointed out, there was actually expectations of a good year for many after the 8-8 '79 season.

That relates to prolly my worst Saints heartache... 1979 Week 14, 7-6 vying for the playoffs the first time. MNF vs. Oakland, 28-7 lead in the 2nd qtr, then go on to lose 42-35. You find it on greatest games in Raiders & MNF lists- for all the wrong reasons. I knew at that game it was done for Nolan.

Flat out bad? The '70-72 teams were actually the worst to me- pick any of'em. So badly coached and managed it didn't matter who was on the field. They gave draft picks away for washed up or never was players. A head coach that didn't know who O.J. Simpson was!

The Black Ages- past!
The Golden Age- NOW

I agree with your assesment, however this was a game played in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon. The Saints did have a Monday night game against the Rams that year at the Dome, and I believe they lost 24-7.

overreaction. Elders and youth both feel, idiotically, that no one understands them.

Elders feeling the need to have universal respect is also extremely sophomoric.

You're right, I was confusing it with the Oakland game the year before. Doh!

how was I being smug?

I was responding to a previous post that was discounting others opinions because of their age. If that makes you angry, then you have some issues. I'm not even that young however, maybe in another 10 or 15 years I'll lose my "smugness" and mature enough to get angry over messageboard posts and name myself after an immature 40 something television character. I have plenty of respect for elders who have actually done something warrant it, or who are simply just not crotchety jerks.
