One of the things that's always confused me is that a lot of people point out Brees's less-than-stellar performance at the latter part of the season as signs of his old and aging arm, his age is catching up to him, etc. But almost none of that talk was happening during his MVP-like performance in the first half of the season. Did he suddenly become "old" after the Dallas game? Was it definitely him being 40 and not just a "slump" every player goes through? Was this not all the same season?

I guess my question is, besides becoming 8 months older, is there any reason why Brees can't replicate that same success he had in September, October, and November next season?

Sign QB B of future.

Play QB B till week (6-8)

Bring in Refreshed Drew as the season closer and post season run.

IF he wasn't injured and he just can't throw the deep ball anymore it will absolutely have some affect on our O. When a D knows a QB can't get it over them it makes that field that much easier to defend. It by no means points to us not having a SB level Offense but it isn't a good thing.

That being said I think he was hurt.

Play most definitely dropped off Dallas game and after. Deep ball is no longer there

I think the argument they are making is that of arm fatigue

Meaning when his arm is fresh and rested he is fine but as the season goes on and wears on his body his age is not allowing him to recover as he use to. So the the later part of the season you would see a significant drop

I'm leaning towards him being injured because the drop off was so sudden, but I don't think the age/fatigue argument is nonsensical

Apparently he did injure his shoulder at some point from what I hear. I also heard he had a minor procedure done to repair it shortly after the season. I trust my source but he could be wrong.

Brees is not the problem. Our WRs this year were the worst Ive seen in the Payton era and we had no TE to speak of.

This is really my whole point. Dudes just don't start suddenly showing their age after one game after being money all season. I'll agree with the poster above me that a lot can be attributed to having a one-man receiving corp.

I think we’ll be fine for another year. His deep ball has declined but some of it is timing. A lot of deep balls got left up there too long.

This.

I'm really hoping it was a nagging injury. If not, this is one more reason to re-sign Ingram. Running game is going to have to take more pressure off Brees, especially in the early games.

Sure they do, and you will see it in pitchers all the time. Some times you just hit that wall and aren't the same. Often times it is because a player is not accustomed to the number or intensity of the league that they are in but age can certainly be responsible as well

I am still leaning to a nagging injury, but I suppose is ability to recover from that or how much it inhibits him could also be determined by age as the body just wont hold up or recover like it use to

Brees could use one more weapon, preferrably a large athletic tight end. Then maybe we can sign Bryant to a one year deal, But I think the biggest issue is the health of the o-line and whether they can avoid major injury and keep some consistency heading into the latter half of the season and keep that running game humming to not put all the pressure on an aging brees' arm

He was getting pressured way more once our Oline got nicked up , which started from Dallas on.Even Brady looked bad in the first half of the year till his Oline started playing better.

There was a concerted effort starting with the Dallas game through the Rams game by NFL refs to allow opponents to hold, PI, and helmet to helmet all Saints receivers.

Brees got late hit as well with few calls. The OL sustained injuries as well and pass protection broke down fast.

Brees always plays with injuries and does not complain.
