You mean the defense that showed up on all but 3 drives the entire game? Including drives with very short fields? That defense? The defense that played about the same exact game it has played the entire second half of the season? You mean the defense that shut down Alex Smith for nearly 2/3 of the game? Hmm...how did the defense falter? They were tired.

They were tired? Zone would have been easier on them than man

shut down Alex smith for 2/3 of the game? Good job, too bad they couldn't shut him down when it really mattered.

Oh, so shutting a QB down only with 3 minutes left in the game matters more than the other 57 minutes. Got it. I'll make a note to let all the football players I know that.

Here's the deal, the offense sucked. Then the offense clicked. The defense clicked then the defense sucked.

These rarely lined up this game. It was a quick out for one and not the other.

If only we could have made the two work together? The only way that I know how to do that is to give the defense the rest it needs and the buffer it needs by controlling the clock.

I don't think you understand the point I was making. It does not matter if you shut the other team down for 57 minutes, if you let them have their way in the last 3 when the game is on the line, then yes thats the only time it matters.

Think of it as if it was basketball. If we guard the 3pointer all game but decide in the last 3 minutes to stop guarding the 3pointer and hope instead that they just miss the open jumpers then that would be foolish.

You play 60 minutes. Defense did not.

The difference between these is that all year I have been able to trust the offense to overcome their problems whereas the defense has worried me all year.

NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND RUNS MAN TO MAN WITH A MINUTE LEFT IN THE GAME.

"oh but the defense was tired"---- NOT AN EXCUSE, and even if they were tired a ZONE DEFENSE HELPS TO DISGUISE YOUR TIREDNESS

Gregg Williams just mentally fricked up. Called a great game and then blew it at the end. When it counted. When we needed him.
