The New Orleans Times-Picayune's Larry Holder reports Coby Fleener "hasn't been reliable enough catching passes and isn't on the same page with Drew Brees." According to Holder, it's resulted in No. 2 tight end Josh Hill seeing more work with the first-team offense this week. Fleener dropped too many balls in Indianapolis, as well, and it's possible the Saints were actually sending Fleener a message when they "accidentally" listed him with the fourth-stringers on last week's unofficial depth chart. We're not panicking, yet, but it's something to keep an eye on. Not being on the same page with Brees is the biggest concern.

I've been chalking it up to them needing more time to get acquainted with one another, but the "same page" comments keep popping up and the drops. I have no illusions that he'll even sniff Graham type of production, but are we headed towards another bust FA or do we need to be patient?

Damn we signed a dude with stone hands?

Maybe we can sneak some sticky on his gloves.

I think this is probably the case. It took us a bit last year to get in sync too at the position.

He's had a pretty low drop %.

Qb and their receivers have to work at it. This is a multi year relationship, panicking after not even half a calendar year together is ridiculous. Panic if it's next year..

It def should be concerning. This regime doesn't have a good history when it comes to signing free agents. And if we're being honest the money used to sign Fleener should have went to shoring up the offensive line. Lets just hope he lives up to his contract

I think we all would have preferred Boone. We look like we're at the point where we have a lot of receivers who can actually do something.

3 rbs (ingram/spiller/hightower), 3.5 wrs (cooks/snead/Thomas/coleman) , 2 the (fleener/hill)

That's discounting guys who can catch on occasion too... That's a lot..

Since when do you sign veteran free agents to big money contracts and give them a year to produce?

Come on man...frick

But they do have a pretty great history at the TE position.

Since when do you sign a TE and expect him to come in and become an elite top 5 producer? That's more ridiculous with the expectations people have than the people worried. If he has 600-700 yards than is it still "a worry"?

considering what we've paid watson and he was an 800+ yard guy, we didn't pay Fleener that type of money to step down in TE1 Production. Its fair to say Fleener needs to be a 900-1200 yard receiver and maybe just as important red zone presence in this offense or its nothing else short of waste of monies.

Larry Holder? He's turned into a baby Jeff Duncan. Always looking for a story to stir the shite.

And check his drop rate on PFF. It is extraordinarily overblown.

Edit:
And the media team's unofficial depth chart listed him third, not fourth. Yet another idiot that can't depth chart.

weakside blocking, route chemistry, drop % are all significant issues.

I agree, but that isn't going to be his role here.

route chemistry

Which comes with time. He's a great route runner

his drop % is not a significant issue

It's not. His drop percent has never been near the top in the league.

Blocking yes. Chemistry with Brees yes. Route running itself no.

Edit:
God damn ninja!

So you're expecting Graham/gronk numbers.

Watsons year was an outlier skewed by 2 games. He could be a good red zone option and have 600 yards and it'd be fine. Our issue is red zone efficiency, not so much moving it there.

I'll wait for a few games into the season first.

Totally this. And if he plays tonight it should be a good preview of where they really are.
