This is such a horrible way to look at things. Do you really think good teams look at 4th round picks this way?
How come all the good teams draft well and like draft picks? The only team that has done well with a smaller number of drafts picks is the rams and they draft exceptionally well.
It depends on what you are getting in return for the 4th round pick. If it is a high-priced, one year rental who is unlikely to sign with you after the season, it may not be a good trade. If it is a guy who had a decent NFL season and will be in only year 2 of a 4 year contract, that's a different evaluation. Yes, maybe you missed out on that future HOFer for an average player by trading that pick...but the odds of that are pretty low.

I'm pretty critical of this front office, but this is a swap of late-round picks 3 drafts from now. Even if the guy never plays, this trade doesn't matter. Good for them for picking up some depth.

Moscona went on a 5 minute rant about the trade and had the terms completely wrong. I’m 20 minutes behind but he hasn’t corrected it yet.
He thinks the Saints traded two picks and told his audience that.

Horrible to look for good value with your picks? Must be bizzaro world.
No, I was talking about looking at 4th round picks in a way that only 8% of them become starters.
If that's the case then just trade your 4th every year, right? And I don't really have a problem with trading for vele if they believe he can be a wr3 at worst.

Not surprising. He just wanted to rant about something to try to draw listeners.

I said elsewhere that only 20% even make it to a 2nd contract (I know it wasn't repeated in that post though).
Not saying Vele will given his age, but he is at least a borderline starter for 3 years, which is about as well as you can realistically expect for a 4th.
But yes, IF you can trade your 4th for a borderline starter every year, it is worth at least considering, depending on your current needs and their current age and contract situation. While Vele's age isn't ideal, his contract definitely makes it worth it.
