Saints spent a second round choice in the 2016 NFL draft on WR Michael Thomas out of Ohio St. Thomas developed into the leagues best wideout shattering several NFL records for productivity in his first four seasons.

{When opposing teams managed to contain Thomas the teams passing attack faltered because of the lack of weapons around him.}

The Saints could look for a trade at wide receiver before next months trade deadline.

Their are some intriguing free agent options still available . Veteran WR Golden Tate is a player who would instantly upgrade the receiving corp. Antonio Callaway , Ashlon Jeffery, John Brown and Javon Wims are other free agents who have had success in the league.

quote:

Sean Paytons stubborn refusal to invest more into the receiver position arguably cost his team in Brees waning years. That inability to provide Jameis Winston with viable threats is a shortcoming that could hamper the Saints throughout the 2021 season.

Something needs to be done if the team is ranked 32nd in passing and total offense. Hands down weakest position group on the team.

It’s evident the reason we lost wasn’t solely on the recievers.
If the line would’ve held their own, Jameis would have time to find them open.
Instead of running around and throwing the ball to the other team.

Plus defense doing their job.

I mean at some point it's hard to make every position elite, especially for a small market team. We drafted Smith hoping he'd pan out, Ted Ginn, obviously drafted MT, Cooks, brought in several TEs over the years. At some point our D needed lots of work, it takes a lot of draft and money to keep a good Oline (contrary to how they played last week) and still pay Brees those last few years. I don't think Payton was stubborn, but there's only so much money and draft picks.

Most teams who are missing their best WR, who happens to be the imo the best in the NFL, and another starter WR in Smith, is going to struggle. Especially if that many assistants are out to help with in game adjustments, I don't care if Payton denies that being a factor, one of the things I like about him is he'll take the blame regardless of who's fault it is. But as someone else said, missing those weapons and Oline laying an egg is a bad recipe. Saints Oline plays good during the season, they usually wait till playoffs to lay eggs.

It is self evident that our wrs. are unable to get any separation. Winston had all day to throw in the first game and our wideouts were hamstrung for the vast majority of the game. I think we had a team loss against the Panthers but it doesn't alter the fact that we are getting nothing from our receiving corp. This isn't just going to go away.

Let's be honest here. Besides MT we don't have another NFL caliber starter on our roster. Except maybe Stills. Trequan has proven to be nothing but inconsistent.

John Brown is a legitimate #3, I thought we would sign him after his release.

Book pick should’ve been a WR

Which mid round receiver would be immediately helping the team right now?

Agreed he is better than anything we are putting on the field.

That was a head scratcher.

How exactly are we going to be “fine” at WR? We easily have the worst group in the nfl. Our top 2 are both UDFA who would be 5th guys in a good group.

Exactly and it is only magnified because of our shitty TE’s too. The saints need weapons big time

It’s a team effort. Winston is trying too hard not to make a mistake, line play was horrendous last week, running game was non-exsistent, WRs aren’t getting separation.

Nothing went right last week. Hopefully that was a low point and we can improve on those things before the end of the season.

We haven't been fine at WR for years and for whatever reason they've done nothing to seriously improve the situation outside of Emmanuel Sanders.

The Falcons just worked out John Brown a couple of days ago and haven't signed him as of yet but I heard he had a pretty good workout. I think he's someone that can help us but we can't sit around and let these opportunities dry up. Golden Tate is still out there and Javon Wims.
