Yeah we still need an outside CB. This signing doesn’t change that. Though I still think their priorities when it comes to the draft will be LB and WR

Continuity.
I love it. We keep on checking off [NEED] boxes prior to the draft, as per usual.
We have an open board. Best available talent: Come On Down!

Saints run nickel 80% of the time, which is why these versatile DB signings are important. And we have safeties that can cover. So if anything were to happen to Jenkins or lattimore, you can slide a Williams outside with safety help.
There are only so many “outside” WRs per team that need to be accounted for. Some teams don’t even have one good CB, much less two. If Lattimore goes down, Janoris essentially replaces him and everyone else slides up. It’s a sum of its parts, especially with safeties that can cover. We can only dedicate so many resources to that position

True, but this is how you get knocked out of the playoffs. Good passing teams will exploit that all day.
I'd just like to have a better option than PJ Williams for backup outside CB. There are still a few damn good options in free agency that shouldn't be overly expensive. Draft is still a possibility as well.
It just seems like a big risk to me. We have such a loaded roster, & that's 1 very easy way to give the other team a big advantage.

Good deal.
Continuity will be very important this year.

I don’t think so. If you lose Lattimore and Janoris, sure. But out secondary is better equipped than 95% of the league. And covering the slot is just as important as the outside. I think we are chasing an unattainable goal to have really good players backing up our already good players.
We know 3 CBS are going to be on the field 80% of our defensive snaps. Jenkins and Lattimore, and a mix of guys at the slot. Weighing snaps and cost, some of the guys you’d like to backup Jenkins and Lattimore aren’t feasible. But those coveted guys are likely chasing more
I’m not ruling out the draft though.

You're probably spot on here. I still can't believe Apple got 1 year, 6 mil fully guaranteed.
I just assumed we might have a legit shot at Amukamara/Kirkpatrick b/c the 1st wave of F.A. is now over. I wouldn't lower my price if I were them either, b/c the talent takes a huge dive after they're gone. There are still a few of them available, so there's no reason to rush for them.

We probably should just cut PRob at this point. He is like our 4the best option at nickel and is horrendous on the outside
Posted on 4/2/20 at 4:52 pm to Mpd31
He did play quite a bit on special teams last year but I do think there’s a chance he gets outright cut and misses the 53. You never know though
Posted on 4/2/20 at 4:58 pm to Mpd31
That's actually the exact thought that went through my head when I saw the PJ news. Looked up PRob's contract shortly after.
He would have to really suck bad to get cut for less than 1.0 mil though.
2020 cap # - 3.45 mil
2020 dead money hit - 2.5 mil

Unless we draft Amik Robertson
Posted on 4/2/20 at 5:31 pm to WicKed WayZ
Not many NFL players would agree to just 2 mil a year!! Steal in my book!

You want a 5th nickel corner?

I agree he is a steal but I don’t think he had many other options either. Second year in a row no one else wanted him lol. I actually like him though. He is versatile and quite serviceable in the slot and has shown playmaking ability.

You are right I didn’t see these numbers. If he gets cut it will be for the roster spot and not the money. Roster cap went up with the new agreement so he will probably make it.

I’d be a lot more comfortable rolling with our secondary as is opposed to rolling with our LB unit as is. That needs to be addressed either in the first or third.

Well, Eli Apple is a Free Agent again

You’ll get bashed but just like with PJ, he knows the system and outside of a CB in the draft, you’re not going to find a much better backup. Like Gyno said, it’s unrealistic to think we are going to have stud players as backups at every position. Some positions we are going to have be ok with having average players as backups.
If we can sign Apple to a cheap deal that’s similar to PJ’s, I think we should welcome that with open arms. He knows he wouldn’t play unless Janoris Jenkins got hurt so he might not want to take it but if he does, we’ve certainly had worse backup corners

This is a great move. Literally no risk and barely paying him anything.
Can play inside or outsider corner and played Free Safety for us in the Tennessee game last year. Great versatility and adds depth. If 23 goes down we can plug him at outside corner (not the same level of play but who tf else would be have subbed in there). Willing tackler and really helps in run support. If he's your 4th cover guy or so, you are doing just fine. Good move
