There was an interview with Mahomes where he says he called Reid and told him to move up or the Saints were going to get him. He always wanted KC

Not exactly. He specifically said that he did not know or think the Saints would take him. He thought he would be gone before 14 because Reid thought he would be available a little later.

Saints should have traded up and gotten Mahomes. Then Brees could have given Mahomes the keys to the Saints franchise after the 2020 Super Bowl.

If thats the case, its unforgivable to get jumped in the draft. I don't care if Lattimore was guaranteed to be the next Deion.

That is easy to say in hindsight, but it was quite a surprise to see KC come up all the way from 27 to 10 to draft Mahomes. Particularly when KC was coming off a 12-4 season in 2016 where they were the 2nd seed in the playoffs. It was a very BOLD and unexpected move for KC to trade a ton to get a player at a position where they already seemed to have an entranced starter in Alex Smith.

But go back to the draft. Cleveland picked No.1 and did not take a QB (nor were they really expected to). The Bears traded up a few spots to take Trubisky. San Francisco, at 3, had just traded for Jimmy G. They weren't taking a QB. Jacksonville at 4 was still going with Bortles after only three seasons. Tennessee at #5 had just drafted Mariota at #2 two years before and he had a good season in 2016.

The Saints could have traded with NYJ at 6, but with Brees still the starter was the cost to high? The Jets took Jamal Adams and the draft at that point was really falling to the Saints. The Chargers at 7 (Rivers), Carolina at 8 (Cam) and Cincinnati (Dalton) all had QBs who were well paid and entrenched as starters. The Saints new they were unlikely to take a QB. That left Buffalo at 10. They had just signed Tyrod Taylor to a relatively big contract 6 year contract in 2016. They weren't likely to take a QB either. The bigger threat was they were going to take a CB ahead of the Saints (they ultimately did take a CB in Tre White at 27)

Houston, right behind the Saints, was going to take a QB. If there was a team that was going to potentially jump in front of the Saints to take a QB, it was them. But there probably wasn't big concern the Saints were going to take a QB. Everything was there for the Saints at 11...until KC surprised everyone and came up 17 spots.

My only question is was KC really trying to get ahead of Houston to take Mahomes (everyone knew Houston was taking a QB), and because the Saints didn't want to trade (because they were interested in Mahomes) Buffalo was the only chance KC had to get ahead of Houston. Or was KC specifically trying to get in front of the Saints because they had intel the Saints were going to draft Mahomes at 11? Mahomes wasn't viewed as a top 10 lock going into the draft.

Was there any words out of Payton's mouth saying that he would have drafted Mahomes? I mean right after the draft not after Mahomes showed that he was good..

Wasn’t an alleged years ago that someone on the inside of the Saints organization lead the fact that we were going to take in homes with her back which caused the Chiefs jump ahead of us
