It's actually more serious than it sounds. My son had that injury in high school. It's a fracture of the bone on the ball of your foot. That's the bone protecting the big toe joint simliar to how a knee cap protects the knee joint.
So, when that bone is fractured you are basically constantly running on a broken bone - very painful.
