The wide receiver missed the 2021-22 season due to an ankle injury, and his status in New Orleans was up in the air.

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas has not appeared in any game action in over a year due to an ankle injury that required surgery in the 2021 offseason, followed up by a second surgery in the fall.

After much speculation that his time in New Orleans could be coming to a close, Thomas is reportedly expected to remain in New Orleans in the future, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Thomas stayed in New York following his second ankle surgery in the fall in order to have weekly treatments, according to Rapoport. But, now he is back in New Orleans and is in communication with the Saints organization.

“I am told they are not expected to trade him, and they want him back,” Rapoport said. “So, expect Michael Thomas back with the New Orleans Saints.”

Instead of playing for longtime coach Sean Payton, though, Thomas would return to play under new head coach Dennis Allen.

When Payton announced he was leaving the Saints on Jan. 25 after 15 years with the franchise, Thomas tweeted multiple appreciation posts for his coach.

Thomas began his career in 2016 on the Saints, then posted four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. Additionally, he broke the NFL record for most catches in a season with 149 back in 2019. That same year, Thomas was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

None of this means he’ll be playing. His cap hit is too high to trade and they won’t cut him, so expect him to be on the roster is all it says

The Michael Thomas era can't end soon enough. Like being in cap prison with that dude. Will be a glorious day when he is gone.

So you're excited for a player to come back that clearly has given up on his team. He sat half the season for no reason. That isn't someone dedicated, that's selfish.

Quit on his team? The man played an entire season injured to try to get a ring for Brees.

Well you're a racist.

Keep using that racism as an excuse for failure and inadequacies. Nobody sees through that, I promise lol.

No troll. Just tired of seeing Michael Thomas leverage his contract against the team.

Here is a link to Rapoport being interviewed. The key is that they have been communicating.

Wide receiver Michael Thomas spent the 2021 season on the sidelines and somewhat at odds with the New Orleans Saints. A new report suggests that both sides are ready to turn the page on that ahead of 2022.
The Saints do want Thomas back, and the two sides have been communicating regularly, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The prospect of a Thomas trade now appears to be off the table, and the wideout has been focused on rehabbing after undergoing a second surgery on his foot.

The fact that Thomas and the Saints have been in communication is significant. That was one of the major issues last offseason, when Thomas reportedly blew off the organization when rehabbing the injury last offseason. That hastened tensions between the two sides, and there seemed to be a legitimate chance at one point that he’d played his last game for New Orleans.

Thomas posted a dominant 2019 season, racking up 1,725 receiving yards en route to AP Offensive Player of the Year honors. Injuries slowed him in 2020, and 2021 proved to be totally lost due to setbacks with his ankle. He has not played since the Saints’ 2020 season-ending loss, which saw him saddled with an unflattering nickname after a brutal performance. That should make him pretty motivated to return healthy and productive in 2022.

He continuously tried to come back during the 2020 season after injuring his ankle while blocking on a fricking running play. He sacrificed his own health for the team. Some of you have the IQ of a rock.

They are just trying to justify some made up narrative about him.

He clearly didnt handle things well but people are quick to point out his flaws while ignoring all the charitable stuff he was doing...get this... For white people as well. Shocker for some of yall in here i know.

I dont even know why some of the people here even still watch this team. They get their panties up in a bunch over almost everything
