Is this a product of player skill or coaching?
Since the safeties have made the same mistakes under 2 different coaches, I'm going to say player skill is the problem.

I love people who defend a guy playing a position that is supposed to put pressure on the qb by saying it's not his job to put pressure on the qb. The biggest problem on the team is that Smith and Jordan give the qb all the time in the world to throw the ball. If it's not the DE's job to put pressure on the qb, then tell me oh great football mind, whose job is it?
I don't need the tv telling me anything. I said when the guy was drafted that he was a 3-4 DE, and wasn't going to be a good fit. I told everyone who comes to me for my opinion about this stuff that the defense would struggle drafting a guy like this because of no pass rush. I would say I have been proven right. Apparently you think he is doing his job, but I'm the one who doesn't understand football lol. And I never once said that was a DE's only job. But it is more than any other position on the field the DE's job.
It's more like,"HE'S A 6'4, 295 POUND GUY WHO IS STRONG AGAINST THE RUN BUT AWFUL AS A PASS RUSHER, WHY IS HE PLAYING DE?"

What good is a pass rusher on run plays?

What good is a run stopper on pass plays? Is it a passing league or a running league now? I seriously can't even believe this is a debate. It's common sense. If you can't put pressure on the qb, it makes the whole defense look awful.
And by the way, with this stout run defender, how does the rush defense look? The biggest asset a defense can have is a DE, or OLB in a 3-4, that makes the qb get rid of the ball quickly. It leads to bad throws and turnovers. Didn't we witness this with our own team in 2009? Look at the Ravens. They lost their only pass rusher, and the defense isn't a top defense anymore. All the best defenses in the league have elite pass rushers. Why do you think DE's get drafted so highly?
I don't understand football, but apparently I'm talking to people that don't understand the simple concept of how important qb pressure is. This team you are watching this year should show you all how important qb pressure is, but I guess not.

We need a better pass rush from our defensive line.
We need an outside linebacker that can stay healthy so Shanle stays off the field.
We need corners that can cover receivers and either A. tackle any receivers who make catches immediately or B. actually get a bat down or interception when they go for the play.

Dude, you're misunderstanding.
We need Cam AND a pass rusher(s).
It's not like we're only allowed to have 2 DE's on a team.

On point. Jordan, Galette, and Wilson are a very nice young corp to build around. If McBride could ever stay healthy he could make Smith expendable.
However, I am curious as to how Wilson do back at the LB spot. He seems to get washed out of most plays.

I just don't get it.
We have posters who are pissed that Jordan doesn't do it all.
I'm pretty sure modern defenses require 8 players to make a functioning, dynamic DL for a reason.

We need a playmaker on D at every level. Seondary, LB, DL. Sprinkle in 3 pro bowl caliber players for next year either through draft or free agency. Also these players can make the other players around them better.

To be fair, this is what every team tries to accomplish every year

Say a prayer and hope it happens. Cause Dtew only has about 4 years left at pro bowl level

Fair enough. The problem is pairing him with Will Smith, who isn't doing his job either. I liked moving him inside on passing downs, and bringing in Junior and Tez. The problem is they haven't done that as much as I thought they would. I stand by what I said though about him not be a good fit as a 4-3 DE. He isn't balanced enough. I think pairing him with Hicks on the inside could be a dominant pair.

It's not about doing it all. But you have to admit he is very one dimensional. The number one job of a 4-3 DE is to pressure the qb. One dimensional guys like Jordan are better suited for 3-4 defenses. In that situation, his style wouldn't hurt the team.

Just to chime in, but we really do need a ball hawk at Safety. It's not our biggest priority, but they are continually out of position, chasing guys from behind, and missing tackles. You see Safeties come up in the box and make tackles, break up passes, pick off throws, and effectively cover Tight Ends.

Greer, Hicks, Lofton, I don't know that anyone else is worth keeping. The Saints are going to have to make some hard decisions next year when it comes to deciding between Offense and Defense in the off season. I have seen some bad defenses but this one is just pathetic. Guys are constantly out of position taking poor angles and blowing coverages. It is hard to watch.

So lets rag on a guy that does his job correctly because he can't rush the passer.
Look, I'm not dumb, I understand the need for pass rushers, but I'm not going to trash a very good player because he plays a different role.
Plus, he's had success rushing the passer when they bump him inside and bring out some pass rushing specialists to play DE.

And then you say this.

One dimensional guys
For what its worth, you want an all around DE.
If you can't play the run, teams will just run the ball at him. New England did this with crazy amounts of success against Dwight Freeney in his hayday.
