Shawn Merriman obviously sucked once off the PEDs.

How about this. The coaching staff and personnel peeps seem to believe that Galette, Butler, Wilson, et al, will thrive and (along with blitz packages) bring needed pressure in a 3-4. And with that belief, they decided a solid pick to strengthen the safety position was the better choice at 15.

I dont necessarily think the staff believes they will thrive in bringing pressure. However, I think they believe they will do good enough for now. At least good enough so that we can address other huge positions of need.

What do you take....

3 years of a player like how Shawne Merriman played early for SD... or a player that plays 7 years similar to Harper?
That's just it- Vaccaro by all accounts is far superior to Harper, and should be fine. So the question really should be-

do you take 3 years of Merriman, or do you take a safety that should start for close to a decade?

Especially when you consider Drew Brees' age and the small window left.

even ignoring that. 3 years of super elite pass rushing > 10 years of decent safety play

safeties are abundant and cheap. supre elite pass rushers are VERY rare

The best part about it is that the Steelers fans on their forum are split about Jones just like we are. A lot of them think he'll be a bad fit, and I swear a few of them said they were hoping Vacarro would drop.

We picked Vacarro right in the range he was projected to go. I wanted Jones, but while I don't love the pick, I don't loathe it, either. I'm not going to pretend I watched film or have any sort of working knowledge about these picks other than name recognition from being an LSU fan.

The clock is ticking on the Harper/Jenkins combo. At the very least, I'm glad about that.

We'll see if Jones becomes that, right?
