We're keeping five HBs for the same reason we are keeping six CBs: injuries. We have two guys injured in both groups. Unless we are putting someone on IR with the designation to return, they will probably let the extra guys go as guys become healthy.

Hightower is better than Ingram and Robinson with screen passes. He's the #2 receiving option out of the backfield and #1 is hurt.
My question though is is he better than Pierre Thomas.

He's halfway right. Anyone can catch better than Ingram. But I think Robinson and Hightower are about even.
But I want Murphy to be the number 2 while Spiller and Robinson is out.

Nope nope nope. And Murphy is already a better receiving back than Hightower. He'll be the third down back until Spiller is healthy. Hightower will fill Robinson's role. As soon as Robinson is healthy Hightower is gone.
