They had their head coach to begin the season and set a foundation for the season.
Not only that.. the Saints didn't even have their backup head coach until nearly half the season as well..
The saints rallied late as well.. but still didn't have their head coach when they went 0-4.. ALL 4 games losses by single possessions.. and 2 of the 4 directly affected by high school officiating. Can't stress how much this affected everything this season.
Not similar conditions.

With Payton the Saints are 3-1 or 2-2 to start the season. That puts them in the season. Call it a excuse but losing Payton derailed the season. Your correct about a 12-4 season but with him there is no doubt they are in the playoffs.

The true test is putting luck on the saints instead of brees. What would the record be. Probably about 2-3 wins all year.
