Sorry I didn't check the 3 month history of the board before I posted.

You probably thought the same thing when Rod Woodson moved too huh?

Well, you haven't seen him play after the last injury so you're just guessing.
As are you, good sir. But, I'll go out on a limb and say that he'll be less of a useful CB after this injury than he was before.

Come. On.

Why in the frick would you move one of the better cover corners in the league to fill a need position and then create yet another new need?

He plays corner for a reason, if he'd have been a great free safety don't you think some coach over the course of his career may have tried this?

I am holding out hope this thread is a joke

At the same time he is one of the worst tackling corners out there

You aren't serious are you? Go back and watch some tape on MM. He's been one of the hardest hitting corners in the league and he just suffered his 2nd knee injury in as many years. He would be a great move to FREE safety for the last couple of years he is in the league. Our FS is used much more in coverage than in the run game.

I think McKenzie to free safety could make a lot of sense.

He has great timing and awareness of the field - two things that our current FS's sorely lack.

I'm really hoping you are joking. Have you never watched the NFL. EVER? Corneres are often moved to safety near the end of their careers when they lose a step.

As I've already stated, Rod Woodson and Ronnie Lott were both Pro-Bowlers at both positions. Maybe their coaches should have tried it earlier huh? Yeah, someone should have given Bill Walsh and Chuck Knoll the head's up on how ignorant they were to attempt this since they were already great corners.

I'm not saying MM would be a pro-bowler, but he's been on IR twice in two years. He's lost a step. It's worth a shot. The Packers even tried Charles Woodson at safety after they lost to us. It doesn't always work, but it's better than not doing anything.

And the way David is playing now, and the way Porter played before he got hurt, and from actually watching Saints games, safety is far and away our biggest need. Our safeties are not good at all. MM might be able to fill that need, and Porter and David would hopefully come back next season with the same play we saw from them this year. Heck, they might actually be better with a safety back there.

Maybe.

It wouldn't take much, but playing safety is different then playing CB. No guarantee that he can make the transition.

+1

and after Vilma, McKenzie is prob our best tackler.

he'd make a great FS if he could learn the position.

You cant move one of your best man up corners to safety. The Saints run too much man coverage to lose him to safety. I agree with the other guy Usama Young would make more sense at safety. The fact that Mckenzie is physical makes him a good corner. I don't think he has that much time left as a football player though. Saints need to draft a safety in the 1st round next year. Mckenzie, Gay, and Porter are all very good CBs.

not even when he is 32 or 33 and coming off his 3rd major knee surgery?

it could prolong his career

I don't know, the more you think about it the more it could make sense. I just don't know about teaching old one legged dogs new tricks. Its the style defense we play we kind of take our safeties out of the play for some reason and try to run physical man. Its a bad defense but as long as they don't score more than 30 we should be ok.
