Well the combine is over now. People saw the freaks that they wanted to see. Some underperformed, others were complete surprises.

But, regardless of performance, its typically the big name / early round prospects that dominate the headlines. At the same time, there are plenty of under the radar and late round guys that perform very well and end up becoming great NFL players as well.

Here are some guys that are projected to be taken in the later rounds (4-7) that could turn into really good NFL players.

Quarterbacks

Connor Shaw- South Carolina- 6'0 206lbs. 4.66 in the 40 with a 1.63 10ys. His intangibles are off the charts, Shaw has everything you want in a QB. Tough as nails, best leader in the entire draft IMO, and is a WINNER(3 11 win seasons as a starter). He plays his best in the biggest moments and takes care of the football. Just doesnt have ideal height and not a huge arm.

Tahj Boyd- Clemson - 6'1 222lbs. 4.84 in the 40 with a 1.72 10ys. Loads of experience and a very productive college QB. Short, but stout and well built, compact and can take hits. Great footwork and poise. Creative. Does have a slight windup in his throwing motion.

Stephen Morris- Miami- 6'2 213lbs. 4.63 in the 40 with a 1.59 10ys. Great athlete. Big time arm. Can make any throw. Top 2 in the draft in arm strength and deep ball(He and Mett). Raw QB though. Needs to improve his decision making and get better with his reads. Tends to trust his arm a little too much at times. But has a lot of the physical tools.

Running Backs

Tyler Gaffney - Stanford - 5'11220lbs. 4.49 in the 40 with 1.53 10yard split. Went pro in baseball in 2012. Returned to Stanford in 2013. He had 330 carries for 1709yards and 23 TDs. Workhorse type RB. High character guy. And surprised a lot of people with his speed and athleticism at the combine.

Jerick McKinnon- Georgia Southern - 5'9 210lbs. 4.41 in the 40 with 1.46 10 yard split. Was a QB in the Wing T offense. In 2012 he had 269 carries for 1817 yards with 20 TDs and this past year he had 161 carries for 1050 yards and 12 TDs. Was very impressive at the combine.

Kapri Bibbs- Colorado St - 5'9 212lbs. 4.67 in the 40 with 1.60 10ys. Did not have a good combine at all. But was a very productive college RB. This past year he had 281 carries for 1741 yards and 31 TDs. 1 of 3 players to have over 30 TDs in a season. Monte Ball and Barry Sanders were the other 2.

Dri Archer - Kent St. 5'8 173lbs with a 4.26 in the 40. I think we all are familiar with Archer and think he would be a great fit with us.

Wide Receivers

Jeff Janis - Saginaw St - 6'3 219lbs. 4.42 in the 40 and 1.47 10ys with a 37.5inch vert. Small college WR who arguably had the best combine out of all WRs. This kid is a freak. Also very productive in college as well. This past year he had 83 catches for 1572 yards and 14 TDs.

Jalen Saunders- Oklahoma - 5'10 165lbs. 4.44 in the 40 with a 1.50 10ys. Small but extremely fast and explosive. "Waterbug" type of player. Great hands. In 2011 he had 50 catches for 1065 yards and 12 TDs. In 2012 he had 62 catches for 829 yards and 3 TDs. This past season he had 61 catches for 729 yards and 8 TDs. Was also a key player vs Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and had 2 TDs along with a lot of big plays.

Bruce Ellington - South Carolina - 5'9 197lbs. 4.45 in the 40 with a 1.63 10ys, 39.5inch vert. This kid is a phenomenal athlete. Was the starting PG for South Carolinas basketball team as well as a dynamic WR and return guy. Similar to Ace Sanders. This past season he had 40 catches for 775yards and 8 TDs.

Tevin Reese - Baylor - 5'10 163lbs. 4.46 in the 40 with a 1.54 10ys and a 41inch vert and 11ft broad jump. Similar to Ellington and Saunders, Reese is another 1 of those smaller but explosive and exciting WRs. In 2010 he had 51recs for 877yards and 7 TDs. in 2012 he had 53recs for 957yards and 9 TDs. This past season he had 38 catches for 867yards and 8 TDs.

Brandon Coleman - Rutgers - 6'6 225lbs. 4.56 in the 40 with a 1.63 10ys and a 32.5inch vert. Extremely tall and extremely tall. Runs very well for his size as well.

Quincy Enunwa- Nebraska - 6'2 225lbs. 4.45 in the 40 with a 1.53 10ys. Very strong and well built for a WR and runs very well. This past year he had 51recs for 753 yards and 12 TDs. Love his upside.

Offensive Line

Seantrel Henderson- Miami - 6'7 331lbs. 5.04 in the 40 with a 1.71 10ys. Huge and very athletic. But it seems like he just hasnt got it yet with football. Has all the tools to be great, just very raw and needs a good coach to work with him.

Matt Patchan- UF then Boston College - 6'6 302lbs. 4.97 in the 40 with a 1.59 10ys. Started out playing DL early on. Then had an injury that forced him to miss a year of football. Transferred to B.C where he added great weight and became a really solid OT. Great athlete with a high upside. Needs to stay healthy.

Michael Schofield- Michigan - 6'6 300lbs. 5.01 in the 40 with a 1.71 10ys. Good size and athleticism. Versatile OL. Played OG for a full season then made the move to OT the next year.

Trai Turner- LSU - 6'3 310lbs. 4.93 in the 40 with a 1.72 10ys. Very strong and very physical that can move. 2nd best 40 time out of all OL. Labeled as a mauler. Great run blocking OG. And is relatively young compared to other OL. Only a RS sophomore. I think hes just 20 years old. Has the tools to be a solid NFL OG in a few years.

Tight Ends

Arthur Lynch- UGA - 6'5 260lbs. 4.8 in the 40. Prototypical size and a complete TE. Had great hands along with being a great blocker. Great possession TE. Not that athletic after the catch, but has no problem getting open and making the catch. Reliable and durable as well. Only missed 1 game in 4 years.

Trey Burton- Florida - 6'2 225lbs. 4.62 in the 40. An all in 1 type of player. Played QB, RB, FB, TE, and WR for the Gators. Very fluid runner and has a lot to offer. Translates to a HB type of player like Delanie Walker. Very similar to his former teammate Jordan Reed.

Defensive Lineman

Shamar Stephen- UCONN - 6'5 310lbs. 5.25 in the 40 with 1.81 10ys and a 30.5inch vertical. Huge and explosive off the ball. Projects to be a NT in a 3-4.

Caraun Reid- Princeton- 6'2 302lbs. 4.91 in the 40 with a 1.69 in the 10ys. Solid size, but a GREAT athlete. A rare Ivy League prospect. High character and obviously extremely smart. Solid on run support, even better rushing the passer. Had 20.5 career sacks playing DT. Great leverage and very quick. Could have the best hands out of all DL in the draft. Strong lower body and knows how to use it. Really good punch and rip move.

James Gayle- Va Tech - 6'4 260lbs. 4.70 in the 40 with a 1.60 10ys and a 37inch vert. Great size and athleticism. Very explosive. Strong with good balance and flexible. Has experience playing with his hand in the dirt and standing up in a 2pt stance and did well in both. Needs to work on consistency and lateral agility. Tends to play high some plays and needs to improve on breaking down and making the play. Had a lot of plays where he was in position to make the play, but couldnt make the tackle.

Jeoffrey Pagan- Alabama - 6'3 310lbs. DNP in combine so dont have the official #s on him. Great size for a 3-4 DE. Very strong. Reads blocks really well and dissects the play very quick. Good pursuit. Quick swim move. Good hands. Versatile, can play in multiple gaps. Good at staying square and absorbing double teams. Needs to be more consistent

Will Clarke- West Virginia - 6'6 271lbs. 4.77 in the 40 with a 1.63 10ys. Great size, speed, burst, and athleticism. Tall with long arms. Good change of direction, body control, and flexibility. Can bull rush, but also has a good punch and rip and a good swim move. Gets his hands on a lot of balls as well. Being so tall, he needs to learn to consistently play lower.

Linebackers

Jordan Tripp- Montana - 6'3 234lbs. 4.67 in the 40 with 1.58 10ys and a 37.5inch vert. Productive college player. Playmaker that is all over the field. Very instinctive, great in pursuit, high character and 1 of the best motors in the draft. quick to the ball. Great technique and fundamentals. Solid pass rusher. OL have a tough time getting a hand on him, but when they do Tripp struggles shedding the block. Tends to overrun the plan sometimes.

Adrian Hubbard- Alabama - 6'6 257lbs. 4.69 in the 40 with a 1.62 10ys and a 38.5inch vert. Great size, speed, and athleticism. Long arms. Active hands. Very disruptive. Good pass rusher. Needs to bulk up in leg area and work on flexibility.

Devon Kennard- USC - 6'3 250lbs. 4.70 in the 40 with a 1.60 10ys. Up and down college career. Well built, solid speed. Played SLB, MLB, and DE in a 4-3 before finally playing SLB in a 3-4 and played his best at that spot.

Kevin Pierre Louis- Boston College- 6'0 232lbs. 4.51 in the 40 with a 1.53 10ys and a 39inch vert. Extremely athletic and light on his feet, almost like a safety. Smart and instinctive. Very solid tackler with a nose for the ball. Brings the wood. Plays bigger than his size. High character guy. Lacks optimal height.

Lamin Barrow- LSU - 6'1 237lbs. 4.64 in the 40 with a 1.59 10ys and a 35inch vert. Athletic and versatile. Experience playing MLB and OLB. Instinctive and disciplined. Great length for his height. Quick feet and can change direction very well. Solid tackler. Not effective when blitzing and struggles in the open field.

Cornerbacks

Phillip Gaines- Rice - 6'0 193lbs. 4.38 in the 40 with a 36.5inch vert. Great size, elite speed, ball skills. Very smooth and fluid in his backpedal and changing direction. Gets in and out of his breaks very easy. True shutdown CB. Played 1v1 with the opponents #1 WR for 2 years straight. Only allowed 13catches on 40 targets this yearwhile defending 13 others (4 interceptions, 9 PBUs) . Led the nation in PBUs in 2012 with 18. And he has 38 career PBUs, which is top 10 all time. and a Rice record. Could end up being the best CB in this draft IMO, and is projected to go in the 5th round. He is a stud.

Andre Hal- Vanderbilt - 5'10 188lbs. 4.50 in the 40 with a 35.5 inch vert. Good size and speed. Very fluid and smooth. Great in man to man. 1 of the best DBs in the SEC the last 2 years. Constantly underrated, but always shows up in games.

Ross Cockrell- Duke - Very physical at the LOS and in run support. Good closing speed and awareness. 1 of those CBs that just agitate and annoy WRs all game long.

Brandon Dixon- Northwest Missouri St.- 5'11 203lbs. 4.41 in the 40. Small school player that had a great day at the combine. Great size and speed and is very confident.

Safety

Brock Vereen- Minnesota- 6'0 199lbs. 4.47 in the 40 with a 1.50 10ys and a 34 inch vert. Versatile. Played CB for 3 years before moving to S his sr year. Shane Vereens brother.

Ahmad Dixon- Baylor- 6'0 212lbs. 4.41 in the 40. Good size and great speed. Great downhill against the run. Very physical and instinctive. Can read the play and come up and make the tackle behind the LOS. Missile type player. Sideline to sideline range vs the pass. A bit raw. Needs help with man to man technique.

Mo Alexander- Utah St- 6'1 220lbs. 4.54 in the 40 with a 38inch vert. Great size with good speed. Very explosive. Can run and hit very well. But extremely raw. Has all the physical tools though.

Nikoe Whitley- Miss St- 6'0 205lbs. DNP in combine. Very productive SEC player. Passes the eyeball test and looks the part. Very versatile. Career - 15 INTs and 229 tackles.

Everyone likes to look at and talk about the big name prospects. But you build your team in the later rounds. A lot of these guys can come in and play ST immediately and develop into big time NFL players in the future.

The guys I think would fit in great with the Saints: Jerick McKinnon, Dri Archer, Jeff Janis, Jalen Saunders, Quincy Enunwa, Seantrel Henderson, Trey Burton, Caraun Reid, Pagan, Will Clarke, Hubbard, Phillip Gaines, Andre Hal, Brock Vereen, and Ahmad Dixon.

I think Will Clarke and Phillip Gaines are the 2 best players out of all these guys, with Gaines being the best. He could be the best CB in the draft IMO.

Im sure I left a lot of guys out, so feel free to add guys to the list

I thought I was alone in the Bruce Ellington campaign

this guy is going to be a nice slot WR in the league. I don't know if he is a good route runner but as far as getting separation, I think he'll be just fine.

Xavier Su'a-Filo- UCLA - 6'4 303lbs. 5.04 in the 40 with a 1.75 10ys. Started as a true freshman. Then went on a Mormon mission for 2 years. Versatile OL that has experience playing guard and OT. Most likely an OG in the NFL. Very quick off the ball with good footwork. Can pull, trap, and combo block really well. Nothing about him really stands out, hes just a solid and productive OL.
I think he goes in round 2. Gil Brandt thinks he might even slip into the late first round.

I'd love to see us draft LB Jordan Zumwalt from UCLA in round 4. He played outside at UCLA, but he projects inside in the pros. He doesn't have the speed to be an edge player in the pros. He's 235 right now, but could carry 250. Would be a steal in round 4. The kid is a football player and a solid citizen in the locker room.

here is a few Bruce Ellington highlights.

he usually seems to find the separation. I'm not seeing many good routes but I just like his play making ability and his athleticism.

Game winner vs. Michigan in Bowl game

for the tying score vs. Mizzou
Notice Matt Millen as the color guy LOL.

2012 Highlights

Ellington vs. Wiscnison in the Bowl Game

One handed catch vs. Wisconsin

Long catch vs. Arkansas

2013 vs. Florida- TD reception

notice how a lot of these are 4th down plays

I think he would do fine in the Saints offense but most on here want a big physical WR.

I don't know if I disagree with that but mainly I just want WR's who can get open.

there were times when the protection was there for Brees but he had to hold onto the ball because no one was open.

then afterwards, it seemed like the offensive line caught too much blame when in fact the WR's were just as much at fault for not getting it done.

Nice little review KG on some small schooled hopefuls. I too was impressed with a few you mentioned defensively: Kevin Pierre Louis, Jordan Tripp, Philip Gaines.

Based on measurable alone, I really like WR, Jeff Janis.
6'3", 4.42 40 & a 37.5" vertical. Nice...

I love small college players too. They have a chip on their shoulder to prove the world wrong.

Nice.... I like Deone Bucannon a lot as well. But think hes a 2nd rounder and top 3 safety in this draft.

And yea Whitley is a playmaker. Could be a really good NB as well as Safety.

Janis absolutely destroyed the combine. Guys a freak.

And Seibert

Nobody should be sleeping on Phillip Gaines. I really think he will be just as good as the guys going 1st round.

I like Ladler as well. Strong, physical, and very instinctive. Forced 5 fumbles his senior season alone. But I think hes a SS at the next level. Just doesnt have great speed and range in coverage.

Could be a great NB though. And will be a great special teamer. Can hit like a truck.

Bumping because of the Byrd signing, which changes the way we will draft.

Still can get good value in the mid to late rounds....

I think the Byrd signing instantly improves our entire defense reducing the need for a CB and obviously eliminating the need for a S (in the early rounds, at least).

Unless we sign a WR, that's the direction I hope we go in the first round. If not WR, then OT.

So for this thread, that makes me want to look at defense for the mid to late rounds.

Would love to get Gaines. Cockrell and Dixon would be good picks too.

At LB, I like Hubbard.
