nuttin new or earth shattering, adding cuz I do repsect his opinion out of the talking heads out there-

worth a read

pretty clear cut to the armchair GMs here-

1. pass rushing DE difference maker
2. playmaking OLB
3. OL upgrade at OT or C
4. keep backend of D infused with fresh talent to challenge for reps

The one thing Triplett asserts that I disagree with is letting go Smith, Vilma, & Ellis will not provide cap relief to go after anyone with. We've looked at those numbers ad nauseum. Definitely will provide enough to go after one high profile impact UFA like Avril, Michael Johnson, or another name (you insert). Prolly even another FA more midrange cost but with starter potential.

Add a 1st Rder that can start day one (CJ Mosley, John Jenkins, Jonathan banks, etc) and there ya go.

The top 3 needs are def the most important. And OT is more important than a C right now. IMO. we get beat on the outside way more than the interior of the line.

Can we sign a RT with that cap room Mr. CapRoomBlues?

Then draft

hard to imagine their on field skills can't be upgraded. None of them are anything special anymore. No matter the cap savings. Or even Money extra spent cause its needed at those positions.

Broderick takes Ellis' overpaid and disappearing act and hicks plays along side, add depth behind.

ETA: Glen Dorsey on the cheap.

I might get burned for this, but Namndy Asjolfjiskdjfskljflsdfj is probably going to be a FA and has already had two huge contracts that he's played out. Possibly could take a 1 or 2 year deal to try and win one.

FWIW, I laughed at people who mentioned him here a few years ago.

You overlook Brees's base salary going up by $6m, Bunkley $3m (his base salary is guaranteed in 2013, cutting won't help), Lofton with a $5m roster bonus, Hawthorne with a $3m roster bonus (I think he gets cut), and Colston's base going up $3m. I could be missing some others, but that's $12m if we let go of two starting LBs. $17m if we let Hawthorne go and keep Lofton (likely scenario).

Had to look up Sed's contract.

From rotoworld

quote:

Saints DT Sedrick Ellis is not expected back with the team in 2013.Ellis' rookie deal is up after the season, and he's never lived up to expectations inherent for a top-ten draft pick. Ellis was the seventh overall pick in 2008. Billed as a three-technique, pass-rusher coming out of USC, Ellis has 0.5 sacks in his last 24 games. He's also been only an above-average run defender.

if we have greer, prob, white and whomever else with an upgrading front 7,i'm a bit less concerned about corners. corners are useless without the front 7. But if we're able to get a talent on the cheap, i'm always for it.

Couldn't agree more. Our Dline has been shite. Also look at the Players Spags had with NYG. He's going to be pushing for pass rush specialist.

This is where I was going with it. Doubtful but a man can dream.

OT is much bigger need than C.

Also, I think you put a guy opposite Cam Jordan who can really get into the backfield, it will make him even better. I really like his play thus far. Seems to be a guy that gets better each week.

Even bigger hit is Jimmy Graham needing a new deal. Still, I think one higher dollar impact player is possible

I don't see RT change. Strief not all pro but not terrible at a very affordable price. Charles brown to LT starter is the very best answer but we haven't see enough reps and he's been injured so regularly we dunno if such is possible. Don't doubt it could though. Remember Bushrod had almost zero reps after being on the team two years and then he stepped into the role. Exactly like Mayock said, It's just a matter of bang for the buck ratio in re-signing Bushrod. He may be back but only at the right price.

Smith, Vilma, Ellis gone is net cap add of almost $16mil

I'm expecting to see Hawthorne perform much better in the stretch. He's been dinged all season. Doubtful cut IMO.

Mosley would look more like the 9-7 finish range pick. Moore might not be had even at 5-11. As the NFP first mock had, using the Saints current #12 spot, they had Mingo & Montgomery available for the Saints to choose from. Not an outlandish possibility. They have Moore at #7 and no Mosley. Still tbd if he declares.

Think on just two impact players added...

some combo of-

Avril, Freeney, Osi, or Michael Johnson
AND
CJ Mosley

-or-

Shaun Phillips (any other UFA OLBs?)
AND
Mingo, Montgomery, or Jarvis Jones

I could see such a combo doing the trick to turn the corner on D. Then again I thought Lofton/Bunkley would be a huge upgrade. Lofton okay but disappointed in how few reps for Bunkley. We might get to see Hawthorne healthy & full speed in the stretch run here.

Remember to play the next year card for Chamberlain & Romeus too. (Tiller, Jones, Toon on offense).

Please God, NO!!! We already have two deadbeats from Gumpaloosa and when's the last time one of Saban's " NFL Ready" LB's had the kind of impact we need??? That's right, NEVER.

If you're forced to pick between the two LSU DEs, you go Sam Montgomery everyday if you're the Saints. He's like a younger Will Smith. I'm just not high on Mingo. He seems too one dimensional.

on not drafting a player cuz he's from a certain school

The Pats & Ravens seem happy with Donta Hightower & Courtney Upshaw gump backers. Demeco Ryans all pro before injuries.

Sam is a 4-3 DE. I think Mingo is an OLB in a 3-4 in the NFL

It's obvious we need someone on the line, whether it be offensive or defensive.

OL
1. Taylor Lewan T Michigan
2. Barrett Jones C/G/T Alabama
3. Eric Fisher T Central Michigan
4. D.J. Fluker T Alabama

DL
1. Sam Montgomery DE LSU
2. Star Lotulelei DT Utah
3. Sheldon Richardson DT Missouri
