Could this be Texans trying to get in on the Payton sweepstakes?

Major city
Good cap space
#1 pick - Bryce Young
Tom Brady could start and mentor Young
Plenty of draft picks

Lovie Smith has been meeting with #Texans owner Cal McNair to state his case for a second season, per sources. People familiar with the dynamics in Houston believe Smith may be one-and-done, though no decision has been communicated. Story with @RapSheet:

No way they'd give up their #1 pick because that would be one of the main carrots to get SP as their coach. What other capital do they have? Pearce?

They have two first rounders though. Not sure where the other one lands. 10-12 range?

Won’t matter- Loomis will frick up and only demand a bunch of lower picks instead.

Houston will probably do their dumbass McCown thing now that the Colts ripped off the completely unqualified bandaid.

I'm so sick of these ridiculous low brow "Loomis will CHOOSE lower picks over higher ones" nonsense. If anything Loomis is a bean counter, He will leverage teams against one another to get the best compensation possible. I love the idea of Houston because they have plenty of picks after the trade with the Browns and Payton could still start over with Bryce Young, which is something he would want to do. The more teams involved the better for us

Is this fact, or your personal opinion? Most likely the latter. Time will tell on this mess with SP…dude may decide none of the openings are a good fit for him and sit out 2023. Remember, the ball is in HIS court.

I mostly agree but Loomis' leverage over teams is also subject to Payton's interest in those teams. Houston might be willing to trade the #1 pick but if Payton won't "unretire" to coach Houston we won't have a deal. For instance, Loomis might have to settle on the 20th pick instead of an offer of the 6th.

That would give Payton first pick and shot at Bryce young or tank and get Caleb Williams next year
