My best guesses as to why they would just prefer to leave the $4m open and carry it over:
-in the unlikely event that they trade for a somewhat pricey player, it's probably easier for them to have the cap space and not bother with having to restructure anyone
-we're thinking of it in purely cap terms, but Benson can make a decent chunk of change just collecting interest on that extra $4m over the next year

Split feelings here... Graham is worth WAYYY more than this, BUT this is a great deal for the Saints. Easily saved 2-6 mill per year...

Agent speak.

0% split here. He scored 21 million without ever playing again.

Can't root for guys to get paid? Especially guys who are major contributors for teams you cheer for?

I guess I watch to much basketball and baseball. The contracts don't even compare.

And don't forget we need about a mil for the 52nd and 53rd players(combined not each) and another $800k for the PS players(again combined). That leaves us with closer to $2.5m for emergency signings, with anything left being carried over.

Last year we only had half a mil left to carry over.

He's getting 11.5 per year for the first two years. 13 million this year, which is more than the WR tag and we can revisit his contract later.

It is said that now as a TE, the salary of Graham is not less than a top WR.

Don't get it twisted. The franchise tag is a heck of a bargaining tool. It shields him from FA. He would have fetched much more on the open market.

I'm not mad at all at Jimmy for trying to get as much money as he could, we all would have done the same in contract negotiations of our own.

But since I'm not connected to him in any way, I'm fricking glad the saints won and got a fair deal. I would've liked another year for this kind of money but 4 is fair all in all.

Now let's kick some falcon arse baby. Who Dat!

I spoke of minimum years to be here using the signing of JG as a possible clue.

I know Galette is a fan favorite but resigning Jordan is about 10x more important

Yep- Jordan becomes the big issue for the Saints now...

Thing is we have Jordan under contract through the end of the 2015 season. Galette is dependent on whether he gets 12 sacks(FA next year) or not(FA at the end of the 2015 season).

So while Jordan is more important, Galette's future may have to be decided first.

It may actually increase our odds of keeping Galette, Jordan, and Hicks if Galette does hit 12+ sacks this year. He would be by far our biggest FA next offseason and room can definitely be made for him.

Otherwise all 3 would become FAs in the same offseason and the likelihood of keeping all 3 in that scenario is much tougher.

Either way Jordan will get franchised after the end of the 2015 season. He's going nowhere.
