My opinion this is where you go wrong, we should be trying to package these guys together on the field and have a defensive line wreak havoc, not trade them off for each other
well ideally but that's a lot of $ we'd be tieing up between 2 players on the line.

Yeah but they'd be players that are worth it. In that scenario you probably have to leave Hicks go but Wilkerson is a big upgrade.

True, but we did have 2 big contracts out to Charles Grant & Will Smith at the same time

I'd be interested to see what Hicks market will be, because he has got the skills & measureables but is just not consistent enough....I like Hicks, but I'd be more than okay with letting him go for Wilkerson

I would do 31 for him. We can find the money to pair him with Cam. Give up both 3s and 13 to jump up for Fowler or Williams. Take best ILB in the second. Defense completely changed and upgraded.
If you get Fowler see if you can get a 3 or 4 for Gallette and draft a Guard.
I know we have said we are not touching Drew's contract but it is always an option to free up big money for the right player.

We literally cannot part with Galette until 2017 without losing a ton of cap. Plus why are we then trading him when the point was to upgrade? He's been our most consistent pass rusher rusher last two years.

Not sure what his future contract situation is.
Yea and he walks when we cant afford him... No Thanks.
I rather a rookie contract and remember there is a reason he's being traded...
Plus #31 is way to high for that guy in my opinion.

Why don't teams like the Browns ever trade for someone like this, sign them to a contract with a ton of signing bonus and very little backend guaranteed money, then trade him for higher picks.
Example, browns trade #19 to the Jets, sign Wilkerson to contract with $22M signing bonus and $1M salary for 2015 with reasonable salaries in later years. Then Browns could trade Wilkerson and eat the signing bonus into their cap space while getting back better picks. Would you trade #13 plus some for Wilkerson with $22M of his guaranteed money already paid?
Basically they would be buying upgraded picks. You see this in basketball all the time, but never really see it in football. Not sure if teams are just unwilling to spend the money or what.
ETA - more a question about why teams don't buy picks with cap space like is done in the NBA. Not sure of the value of Wilkerson.

cause signing team will have to eat the guaranteed monies right....

Yeah, last year he consistently didn't rush the passer worth a damn.
Trading 31 for Wilkerson is a no-brainer. That being said, I think the Jets would want something more in return. That's like Tennessee offering us their 2nd rounder for Cam Jordan.

That's a huge assumption.
Wilkerson has to be looking for mega bucks. I say this because the Jets made an extension for Wilkerson a top priority this off season. If it really comes down to the team wanting to move on, that tells me the guy is trying to break the bank.
I say he's looking for JJ Watt type money ($50M guaranteed with a yearly average of about $15 to $16M). I guess we'll see.

Correct. The Browns right now are around $25M under the cap. They could sign the player (Wilkerson) and eat the signing bonus thereby increasing his value. A very good player on a decent contract because a $20M bonus was paid is valuable.
ETA - It is basically using leftover cap space to buy a draft pick. The Seahawks probably gave up more for Graham since his contract is good due to bonuses being eaten by us.
I do not get why crappy teams who are way under the cap don't sign desired FA's with a big signing bonus and trade him to a cap strapped team for draft picks.

They will want too much for him, but I wonder why the hell they want to get RId of him. He's a top 10 defensive player and a perennial All-Pro. Conduct issues incoming?
But if it's nothing to do with that then I'd been all for giving up 31 and a 3rd for him. He could be an X factor for us, he's that dominant and he's young so we could tag him next year after the money comes off the books and sign him
