If we had stayed at 27 and (hypothetically) taken Davenport there, we would have given up the 27th pick in exchange for Davenport.

I can't understand why people mention this. If that's the case then every pick is given up for a player, why mention it? The point is naming what was given up extra for the trade and that's next years first. The only reason 2 firsts are mentioned is to make it sound more dramatic.

Because that’s literally how drafting a player works. You give up a pick, you get a player in exchange.

It really, really isn’t. For the majority of people, it’s simply the most direct description of what happened. I’ve always described this type of trade, regardless of the team, as giving up 2 firsts for an earlier first; it’s simply what feels like the most natural description to me and it’s how I’ve always described it. I’m not trying to victimize the saints to make it seem like we got screwed over or anything. There’s no hidden agenda that you’re pulling back the veil on. Y’all are just complaining about semantics.

I can't believe this debate is still raging. He obviously is trolln us by wording it for the most dramatic effect of sacrafice. You don't make a purchase, come home and be like, "Guys I paid $1000 earlier" and leave it at that. Everyone would be like what the frick? You say "I bought _____, for _____" A trade is an EXCHANGE of goods; look the definition up. It's not just about one side or the other, a trade encompasses both what was received and given away.

We used 2 picks, yes. But we traded 27 for 14. So we only GAVE UP 1 pick. We used 14 to select him. And 14 was better than our original pick.

So we gave up 1 pick to move up in the draft.

Hope this ends the thread. This is the long and short of it.

"We used 2 firsts" is a headline.. attention-grabbing and doesn't tell the whole story. The whole story is we only truly lost out on a single first.
