I believe "a free pass" was certainly not granted to Payton, the Saints nor their fans.

For this game, doesn’t really matter how poor of a coaching job he did. He had the team in position to win the game, and the league stole it away.

What about the Vikings game last year?

Let's be fair. PRob played about 2 snaps this season. Kirkwood really only shined when we didn't need him too. Coleman? Are you fricking kidding? Cam Meridith? I think Coleman was a better receiver this year and he wasn't even on the team.

Downvotes mean nothing to me.

Open minds and constructive
conversations are what’s important.

Payton is an offensive mastermind. Belichick will go down as the greatest HC ever as well as the greatest defensive mind the game ever saw. If you are questioning the Saints defensive game plan, you need to point that in the direction of Dennis Allen.

Are you saying CSP was not responsible for our onsides kick in the SuperBowl that probably won the game for us?

Is he not responsible for the Rams fake punt?

Payton didn't design Ambush. He told McMahon he wanted an onside kick available for the game. McMahon designed it & was responsible for the preparation 2 weeks prior to the game.

Payton warned the special teams staff to be prepared for a fake punt leading up to NFCCG. Banjo made the mistake of turning & running because the rest of the unit was playing punt safe.

Someone should start a thread about that game perhaps.

I was. You're being short-sighted.

Okay? So therefore, he wasn't a contributor?

None of those receivers are amazing on their own.
The point is, we lost four wide receivers to injury, and we couldn't replace their production.
And THEN, Hill got injured early in the game, cutting down our receiving options even more.

He also had 2 weeks.

Sean scores more points than both these teams with that prep, IMO. Especially in that dome.

Nice hearing from you Brod.

I agree with what you’re saying. But I think at some point the HC has to take responsibility for L’s as well as W’s.

We have witnessed many missed opportunities over the years with Drew as our QB.

Hope we can do it next year.

Of course, you're absolutely correct. The Saints were probably more beat up than the Rams.

The Rams played a WHALE of a game in NOLA, they really did. They had the game gifted to them by the Refs, and I'll always believe that it was planned and intentional.

Now, getting to the OP's question: The question is based on the faulty premise that Payton screwed up the game plan and play-calling. Payton's coaching was good enough to win the game. Payton had his team OVER-achieving at that point in the season.

I have bashed Sean Payton's coaching abilities repeatedly in the past because his teams always seem to start slow and have weak defense. HE FIXED BOTH -- right before my eyes and he SHUT my mouth.

The OP's premise and question are very unfair to Coach Payton because he did an EPIC job of coaching this season.
