I was watching the NO/PHI replay and thought I was losing my mind because the Eagles got the ball at the 42 when the Saints scrimmaged from the 35 on the missed FG.

Somehow after years of watching both levels of football I thought the ball was ALWAYS spotted at the previous LoS if outside the 20.

Apparently this was so until 1993. What are yalls thoughts on which approach is better?

puts it at last spot of ball. That's part of the gamble with a long FG kick. You're going to also lose 7 yds for a miss.

I sort of feel like it was more fair the other way. Why should the other team get a free 7 yards for a missed field goal?

I preferred the original rule (ball spotted at LOS after a missed FG).

But the offense chooses to go 7 yards backwards.

That also has me wondering about short field goals. Can a team snap it 20 yards back to prevent a blocked kick?

Yes, they can snap it however far that they want to. But that just makes the field goal even longer and potential problems with the long snap probably makes that small chance of being blocked the better choice.

The snapper has to snap the ball to the holder in a perfect spot. The further back the holder is, the riskier that becomes.

But there is no rule. Sometimes on really long FG attempts, I've seen the holder set up 8 yards back, not 7. This is to account for a lower kick which often happens on really long attempts.
