how I have always felt. The cowboys have been dysfunctional as shite. I can't blame his defense for Romo shitting the bed in his own territory late in a game.

I have now come to realize that he never really had much opportunity to succeed under Jerry Jones or with a complete offensive pile of shite (browns and raiders).

spot on

the cowboys had a lot of injuries on defense this past season also.

I guess I wanted to like the hire but I'm just cautious after a nice piece of humble pie from last season. I was pumped when the Saints hired Spags.

I felt good about it before just knowing the system he runs. It was clear GW was using our players to their strengths but just went full retard once in a while(like the last San Fran drive; EVERYONE knows Harper is not great in coverage, much less one on one against one of the fastest TEs in the league; that's all on Gregg).

I fully realized that after mistakenly thinking changing the scheme to a zone would help our players but had the complete opposite effect. Between that and Spags being completely inflexible we ended up with the worst yardage D in history.

Now that we are going back to a man scheme along with the switch to 3-4 to get our best players on the field I feel our D should be on par or better than the 09 D(maybe less opportunistic but more solid in not giving up yards).

Right now there is no denying the good vibes and excitement coming from hiring Ryan and watching them build our new 34 defense.

The few stubborn Rob Ryan haters won't admit it before the season starts, and I understand that... but it sure has that new car smell.

I think everyone, including Payton, fell into the same trap. He was a name. He had great success in New York.

But even though his D in St. Louis was solid it was never great and he was able to build it using pieces that already fit along with calling the shots for FAs and who to draft because he was head coach.

And it's clear his New York teams were great because of up front talent helping his zone scheme and not the other way around.

When he came here damn near every player was strictly suited to man and he refused to adapt to that and the players couldn't adapt to his scheme.

I am 100% confident that just the simple change back to man immediately makes us not a bottom 8 D.

Good analysis, he was put in a shitty situation. No head coach and no talent to fit his scheme. He was stubborn and refused to work with the pieces he had.

Wow, and MY postings suck?!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the proof is in the pudding, let's see how the defense performs in live action.

I DID however see a photo of Coach Ryan in the paper and he really LOOKED like he was taking the job seriously and giving it his all.

Maybe you can post some photos of Rob Ryan at practice and we can analyze his facial expressions and his body language, and from that, make a solid prediction on how the defense will play this season.

Didn't think I would, but I'm slowly warming up to the hire. If he fixes our defense, I'll love him.

I'm still sour about it. He hasn't set the world on fire as a defensive coordinator. His methods are outdated in my opinion. Wish Saints would of found a younger up and coming coach to lead them. If his daddy wasn't Buddy Ryan he still be coaching at the college level where he excelled.

Still not a big fan because he's not fielded good defenses, ever

When Ryan took over the Oakland defense he switched them from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and with 2 years had a top 5 defense. The season before Ryan arrived at Dallas they were ranked 31st. He turned them around and got them to 15 in his first year.

The fact that his defense has never made it to the playoffs or won a playoff game is not a reflection of his work - but rather the shite teams he's found himself on.

Oakland.. Cleveland... Dallas... and still have top-quality defenses. Imagine what he can do with the number one offense and best head coach in the League....

The one thing I remember about a Ryan game was when we played them last year in Dallas. I remember we converted 3rd down after 3rd down to backs out of the back field and Dallas never adjusted. I was talking to my cousin, a Cowboy fan about that last night. He was not sorry to see RR leave. I'm also concerned that we haven't looked for that big belly NT that we may need. I think Ratliff is only about 300 lbs. We need someone to take up blocks. Otherwise, drafting Mingo, Jordan, or anyone else will mean nothing if we're 2nd and 2 all game because we're getting gashed. That being said, after last year's hire and excitement, I don't know what to feel about the hire. I'm too damn scared to be excited until I see a few reg season games.

This is not true. Oakland stayed with a base 4-3 throughout his time there.

@ the guy above me, Ryan's scheme doesn't use space eaters. It's a one gap scheme that uses penetrators. We have the proper personel to run it. Whether the players are good or not is another question.
