He was being compared to Gayle Sayers coming out of college. I think everyone knew he had good hands and wouldn't be like Tomlinson or AP, but they expected him to be a running back first and foremost.

Considering what he was expected to be, Bush has to be considered a bust.

I just really don't get this. Some fans may have expected him to be a RB, but that doesn't define the expectations that the TEAM had in drafting him. And those expectations are the ones that count.

The team drafted him to compliment Deuce, not to be our primary ball carrier. Deuce was only a five year vet at that point. He was coming off of a knee injury, but all indications were that he'd be 100%, which he was, as he ended up having a 1000 yard season in 06.

Prior to being injured in 05, Deuce had 3 straight 1000 yard seasons and had become a fan and front office favorite. How can anyone think he was expected to be a traditional RB when Deuce was clearly slotted in that role for the forseeable future is beyond me.

Reggie was drafted to be a playmaker, gamechanger, and bring excitement to the fanbase. He has done all three.

He has been injured. That doesn't make him a bust. He hasn't had mental/maturity issues like Vince Young, or just plain old performance and focus issues like Matt Leinart. Those guys are busts so far.

Bush just needs to stay healthy and keep doing exactly what he has been doing on the field and the future for the Saints will be very bright.

no way he is a bust. He has been very exciting, scored touchdown numerous ways, and has been a great Saint teammate on and off the field.

the bust perception can be blamed on the MEDIA for overhyping the frick out of this kid at USC and then subsequently calling him a bust because RB hasn't been an all world performer.

Just remember, after the Minn game last year, even though we lost, didnt he lead the league in Combined TDs and there was MVP talk?

ever1 thought Hou was insane for picking M Williams but it was the correct pick. If he was so good PT wouldnt get so many touches. He is a big time playmaker prob top 5 in the league. I think as a true RB he is 100% a bust but he is different then all RB in the league I really think he more of a slot rec.

I like reggie. He's cool. I like his fathead commercial. He is a good Saints player. He runs real fast. He is awesomeness all bottled up in a pepsi.

Where should he have gone in that draft? Who drafted below him has made a bigger impact to his particular team?

2006 Draft

7 Michael Huff Safety Texas
8 Donte Whitner Safety Ohio State

These two stick out...in our current situation...not at #2 though...

27 DeAngelo Williams Running back Memphis

Hindsight is 20/20 I guess...and yes, give me him right now.

Williams is sick. He carried me to the playoffs last year in fantasy and I picked him up in FA.

ETA- In all honesty, I don't think reggie is a bust, nor do I think he was drafted to early. I just think that FANS/MEDIA cause most of the overhype and lofty expectations placed on him. He is a good change of pace back, red zone weapon, TD threat, slot reciever, and soon to be punt return specialist. He's an all purpose guy and I'll take that type of guy on my team any day. He is not over paid, because he was drafted #2. He is paid where he was drafted. Period. If we would have passed, he would have went #3 and still would be making high dollar. Reggie Bush is/was gonna make top dollar in the NFL no matter what because of his skill set and speed. Did the media help that in college? Probably contributed, but hell, they do that to all the high profile players coming out so why would Reggie be any different?

It's funny how many Saints fans are quick to label Reggie a bust due to his injuries while at the same time praising Deuce McAllister (who missed roughly 40% of his career games due to injury) as the Greatest Saint of All Time.

Deuce played in 97 career games out of a possible 128. That puts his games missed due to injury at 25%.. hardly the 40% you assert.

Yeah, but the Giants took Dave Meggett in the 5th round. We are talking about the second pick overall.

I had no intention of contributing to this thread until Deuce was called out.

Yeah, anyone who thought he was going to come to NOLA and be a tomlinson type back had their head firmly up their asses. He was drafted to be used as a weapon that can strike from various points on the field.

tomlinson is/was a weapon that can/could strike from any point on the field.

when you're hailed as "the best RB prospect in 25 years," you're expected to be a great RB

quote:

The only thing that has disappointed has been his injuries and his fumbles, not his rushing totals.

he's the highest paid RB in the league and hasn't hit 4.0 ypc yet, so you're very wrong

then it's fricking retarded to use the #2 pick on him while making him the highest paid RB in the fricking NFL

to be fair, vince has led his team to as many playoff seasons as reggie

considering all the saintards who called me crazy for predicting his career path and absolute overrated position in the draft, i am totally justified in commenting 3 years later

saintards told me they would rather have bush than adrian peterson after we drafted bush

think about that now
