Love the Louisiana on the uniform anywhere, pants or jersey, love the color rush, also the old Fleur de lis, on the old helmets was way better. Not as big of a white outline on it, I like that way better.

The 90s uniforms were my favorite. The white numbers on the black jerseys. The Louisiana patch. The striped socks. They looked great. I read where Benson was the one behind putting the state on the jerseys.

The 1969 preseason black helmet uniforms are legendary, which subsequently outlawed by Commissioner Pete Rozelle. The rest are garbage in comparison.

I'd like to see white pants every once in a while.

That's correct. He wanted to attract a statewide fan base. He was particularly targeting North Louisiana where there were a bunch of Cowboy fans. There was even some talk of switching the team name to the Louisiana Saints.

He also started marketing in MS, the other L.A. (Lower Alabama), and the FL panhandle. Tom had a stadium to fill and an investment to recoup.

What was the problem with a black helmet?

They wore it without getting league approval. There's a rule that states something or another that each team's administration must consent to a team wearing a new helmet, because the helmets are the most recognizable feature of the NFL brand. This rule prevents teams from just wearing a different helmet whenever they want, theoretically meaning the brand will stay engraved into the consumer's mind due to continuity.
