I keep reading story after story on the dire cap situation the Saints are in and that it may get worse. No, in fact, it will get worse over the next 2 years. Graham and Jordan contract will be up and they'll both in the $6 to $8 mill range.

Read a John Clayton story last night and it focused on why teams aren't paying big bucks this FA period (except for Mike Williams). Clayton's theory is you can only have about 6 players in the $6 mill area on any team due to the $123 mill cap (which may not go up too much until 2016).
Isn't that a kick in the balls! That means we'll be in a crunch long enough that Brees will be on the extreme short end of his career. I'm not saying Brees won't still have some gas in the tank, but that's an "iffy" situation...at best.

We need some luck. We need Rob Ryan to hit the ground running and be what we hope he can be: a master motivator and top shelf X and Os guy; we need the staff to do a better job of drafting defensive players; we need to hit on a few UDFAs on defense; lastly, we need better production from the vets. If these things don't happen, it's going to be rough going.

Yea, yea I know there's no enlightening message here, but time is running out and there better be a great sense of urgency here...Brees can't play forever.

This can not be overstated.

Meh... We had virtually the same defense in 2011 and were one min from likely going to the SB (or 1 PT fumble early in game). If we get offense rolling again our d will get better by not being on the field as much. A scheme more fitting should help as well.

I thought it started in the 2015 season?

I've been wondering why teams aren't backloading the dog shite out of contracts. I heard something ridiculous like 63 million more that year.

Loomis will find a way.

Graham is going no where. He'll be franchised at worst, and moves will be made to accommodate the price.

Like Nicks & Bushrod though, I could see Jordan wanting a contract that Loomis won't give into and he will end up on the free market. Another want-to-have-him; can't-afford-him guy.

Jordan still has 2 seasons left and a 5th year team option that will be a little over half the cost of a franchise tag (and that will come in 2015 when the cap goes up fairly significantly). At that point we're going to push Brees's base salary back into years beyond his usefulness. Graham is really the only significant FA over the next two seasons.

We're not going to be in good cap shape in the near future, but it will be like this season: play around with some contracts, maybe let a solid player go in favor of picking up another solid FA (Bushrod/Lewis). Not enough money to go after top flight guys.

The lesson that is being learned around the league is how detrimental an enormous contract to your quarterback can be towards the cap. That's why teams like Seattle, Frisco, Miami, etc. are shelling out so much money because their qb's are not taking up 15%+ of their cap space. I'm not saying Drew doesn't deserve the money, or that he is overpaid, because this franchise would not have achieved what it has without him (even with SP). Presumably I would think Brees will go the Brady "savior route" after 2014. It will be interesting to see what teams do with people like Luck, Wilson, Kaepernick, RGIII, and Newton over the next few years.

It does. New TV deal comes next season, but isn't reflected in the cap until the following year (2015).

I've read press reports that Brees was a gonner. CSP was leaving. Indy had the super bowl all but locked up. Spags was a def guru. Rob Ryan is a joke. Loomis stinks. We listen in on other teams (what ever happened to that?) etc etc.
Certainly ever year that goes by without another ring is tough but as long as we have Brees and CSP we have a shot.
Smith Vilma and Harper will not kill our cap next year. While Jimmy's is the biggest contract to fill I have not seen any numbers that says our team will be crippled by the cap in the next few years.
I will not get hangdawged on Nnamdi watch day.
Not happening.

I think the easiest fix to the Jimmy situation is just cutting Harper next year. Will save 6.1 mill in cap room. Depending on how Smith performs and the way the draft works out that's another 11.5 mill in cap saving if released. (Providing the numbers on overthecap.com are correct for 2014, and just going by the cap savings column)

What cycle did we miss? We won a fricking Super Bowl. Even if we dont win another one under Brees we had a window and capitalized on it.

I'm just the opposite. I think this team is primed and ready. They're going to be better on D. The offense will be better because CSP is back.

Payton and Brees are pissed, league is fricked.

Yeah, like everyone else, I'm wondering what "missing the cycle" is supposed to mean. In a non-menstrual way of course.
