When you look at the entire body of work, the Payton/Loomis FA history really isnt as bad as people paint it out to be. Yes, he did give some awful contracts but that is in hindsight.

For example, Bryd was one of the highest graded safeties in the league when we signed him. But overall, they really have brought in some solid players and contributors.

Brees of course

I go Greer and Sharper next. Defense has been overall poor but they scored a year of magic out of old Sharper. Greer was not a big name but came in and solidified a perpetually weak area

Sproles my #4, a perfect piece for a Payton offense and provided a little return game juice

Homeboy Randall Gay came in and was very solid too

For the money versus production I count Byrd as the worst

Jason David and Brandon Browner were two very special cases of dreadful flops

Not big money but I hated Laurinaitis too. Everyone on the planet said he was washed up, and he was.

Kreutz was an underrated flop. He got revenge on the Bears and retired like one week later. Total dick move.

People shite on the Byrd signing, but to be honest I would place the blame less on that and more on the failure to put him in the right situation.

Our chief need at the time of that signing was playmakers who can take the ball. Byrd did that in spades in Buffalo. You can see that he is not playing the same role now that he did with the Bills just by watching his highlights from then and watching him play now. He has not been used correctly.

It was a good signing, a good overall coaching staff would be reaping rewards from it now.

10 Best:
1. Brees
2. Fujita
3. Sharper
4. Greer
5. Sproles
6. Lewis
7. Fairley
8. Watson
9. Gay
10. McCray/Hargrove
10 Worst:
1. Browner
2. David
3. Byrd
4. Hawthorne
5. Lofton
6. Kaesviharn
7. Spiller
8. Simmons
9. Fleener
10. Laurinitis

Lofton and Hawthorne are underrated in how shitty they were as signings because they're overshadowed by David, Browner, etc. The fact that we kept pushing their money made it worse.

Lofton is one of the most overrated Saints ever. He was pretty terrible. The fact that he lasted one year after the Saints proves it.

Grubbs was a tough one because he had a few good years then fell off completely.

In all seriousness tho, they haven't done as bad as people think they have. It's just the fact that they've flopped on the big names (Byrd, Spiller, Browner, Laurinaitis). Top 5 best signings IMO are 1.) Brees 2.) Sharper 3.) Sproles 4.) Greer 5.) Fairley

Should probably include a list of veterans that were traded for with picks also.

Guys like Ellerbe, Shockey, Vilma, Unger, Haralson, Hooman, etc.

Those seem to work for the better for the most part.

Have to throw this in that I just read today...

A good example from last spring: the Saints overpaying for yet another skill player while ignoring their porous defense. Who really wanted to pay Coby Fleener $36 million over five years with $18 million guaranteed? Fleener delivered New Orleans eight starts and 50 catches; meanwhile, their defense kept getting torched partly because they shorted it by $36 million. Trust me, nobody else was ponying up that money for an oversize inside slot receiver. But the Saints ignored Fleener’s tell and lost the pot.

Don't forget that TE, not Hooman, we got from NE. He was pretty good too.

Billy Miller wasn't half bad either.

Every time I see Jason David name I have a visual imagage of burnt toast. What makes it worse is that Browner was more frustrating than Burnt Toast Jr. Browner was a liability every single play because he was so ignorant.

Jason David > Brandon Browner.

David sucked but was a good guy and it ate him up that he couldn't perform.

Browner is a worthless a-hole.
