New Orleans Saints
LB Sam Mills

The USFL flamed out, but it was one of the best things to ever happen to the Saints, giving them coach Jim Mora and players such as Mills, Vaughan Johnson, Bobby Hebert and Mel Gray. Mills, an undersized 5-foot-9 inside linebacker who had been undrafted out of Montclair State in 1981, was cut by both the Browns and Toronto Argonauts before starring in the USFL and becoming the heart and soul of New Orleans' famed Dome Patrol defense. He later became such an important part of the fledgling Panthers franchise that they erected a statue of him outside their stadium. Mills went to five Pro Bowls in his 12-year NFL career, including four with the Saints. -- Mike Triplett

Dome Patrol is one my earliest memories of the Saints. Pat Swilling was my guy, but Sam was a rock.

God rest his soul.

Dome Patrol was definitely my earliest childhood memory of the Saints. Swilling was also my guy, but Sam was amazing - especially for a linebacker of his stature.

Great post. Thanks for sharing!

I remember NFL network ranked the all time LB corps and Dome Patrol was #1. Some of the talking heads were adamant. "What?? They never won anything. You can't put them on top without a SB ring."

Did they see our offenses in those days? Carl is a dirty word in my book.

The run and shoot Carl Smith..

Vaughn "MEAT" Johnson was the man..He laid a hit on Roger Craig..after the hit Craig asked "who the hell was that and don't ever let him near me again."

Perhaps my favorite Saint of all time.
Overcame so much and never ever quit.
He is the type of man you want your daughter to marry.
God bless the Field Mouse!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved Sammy.

Hardest hitter: Sammy, Gene Atkins, or Vaughan Johnson?

In my memory, these guys were hard hitters so hopefully this makes sense

This kinda bastardizes the definition of "undrafted player." He was already an established star MLB in the USFL.

Does this mean Reggie White is the best undrafted Eagle or Steve Young is the best undrafted Buccaneer?

Sammy Knight is the choice here.

You illiterate sun of a bitch. Absolutely not a chance. Sammy Knight was on all rookie team, pro bowl as a Saint. 28 Int's as a Strong Safety saint in 6 years. Dude was an absolute league wide stud.

Johnson's shoulder pads were intimidating enough.

Well in the same article, Kurt Warner is Arizona AND St. Louis' top undrafted player. Basically, it's not that you sign an undrafted player out of college, just that you had him on your roster at some point.

Jake Delhomme is Carolina's.

To be fair, those guys were taken in the supplemental draft.

I had the Dome Patrol poster on my bedroom wall as a kid/teen. I don't think a better group of LBs has ever been assembled on one team. Great memories.

My teams GOAT undrafted player, is now the Cowboys #1 WR. Never would’ve thought that in a million years.

He was an UFA that was released from the Browns and the CFL before going to the USFL.

Mills is the correct answer, followed by Sammy Knight then PT. Honorable mention to Beerman Lewis, Lance Moore and John Carney.
