Yea; he didn't sound like his normal self. Sounds all but certain he'd hold out and not play on this franchise tag because of being gun shy from 05. Damn...Saints need to get this deal done.

The Saints offered to make him the highest played player in the league. Yall are acting like we are being cheap. Benson is NEVER cheap. Drew is the one who is out of line here.

he didn't directly say that he was pissed or would hold out, but he did indirectly... he talked about how he was franchised in SD, and how he got injured that year etc

Kinda like in his book he mentioned that was one of the best things to ever happen to him...

Cliff's notes?

Nothing much.

Asked him about the franchise tag, and he said he's already done that before and that ended in his shoulder getting fricked and possibly never playing again, so he's not interested in that.

Asked him about if he talked to others (Colston, Nicks, etc.) about resigning and he said that he hopes they can keep most of the team together because he loves the team they have but that he understands the business of it and things happen.

Asked him about the bounty thing and he said he didn't know about it and was surprised when the story came out.

Asked him why he sounded so down, and he said he was fine but answering the bounty questions is difficult to do because it's a new thing and there are investigations ongoing.

They told him he was the best FA pickup ever and that the deal could've been done already and how he felt, and he talked a little about the previous extension offer last year and how he ended up nixing the talks because he felt like it was becoming a distraction. Also mentioned how things like this take time ("not just days or weeks") and he is hopeful and confident that a long term deal can be reached. He also said something along the lines of that he loves the organization and is taking the contract negotiations seriously and he hopes the Saints feel the same way, or something like that. Mixed in that was them asking about Manning and him saying that he hopes he gets settled somewhere because he's an obvious commodity to a team and whatnot.

Then they talked about some commercial thing for some sort of upcoming event that he is involved with.

I really don't think he sounded depressed, the Greeneberg is so full of shite. They've been hammering us for weeks over this deal and just want to prove themselves correct.

I think it was just 2 subjects Drew isn't entirely comfortable talking about, not that he's depressed.

Agreed on that. He definitely wasn't what I'd call upbeat, but why should he be when getting drilled over and over about his contract and the whole bounty thing. He even specifically said that he wasn't down and that's why he sounded like that (because of the topics).

this is probably a very stupid question.....but can they still work out a contract even after the franchise tag has been placed or do they have to wait til next year now?

Think they hae till camp to work it out (July-ish?).

But now that we tagged him, we can't use it on someone else though. At least that is my understanding of how it works (which may be wrong).

Yeah he seemed more annoyed than anything when they followed up the bounty question with the "why are you so depressed?"

I agree with this mostly.
I don't think he should be complaining about the possibilities of getting hurt on the franchise tag. He actually had a long term deal in place at the beginning of the year, and on top of that, the highest paid contract ever.
I love the guy, but I've lost some respect for him. Ultimately none of these guys are team first, because they have families and futures to look after, but there's a point where holding the team hostage so that one can get paid 1/5th of the team's salary comes across as not being a team player.
I'm a fan of the Saints, and he's a big part of it, but if keeping him means losing or not being able to sign quality players, then adios. Trade him for 2 or 3 1st rounders and rebuild. This is a business (remember)
Sean Payton has made this team what it is. Granted, Brees is a large part of it, and isn't easily replaceable, but Payton's offense has made Brees who he is statistically.
Call me a bandwagoner or not a true fan or whatever, but I'm a fan of the New Orleans Saints.

Couldnt pay Brees what he wanted, and Nicks what he wanted, they are both selfish

Yea the poor guy was only offered to be the highest paid QB in the NFL. I'm shedding tears for him right now.
