Some may be pissed at Goodell but to me, it's a brilliant move. Suspend Vilma for a year. Suspend others for various amounts of games. The penalties, as some have said, are more sever than for "rapists" and "murders", well...the league isn't under the possibility of facing a lawsuit over "rape"/"murder" but if lawsuits start dropping by former players that can't function on normal basis due to repeated concussions/ widows of former players that die prematurely due to mental effects....the NFL is the deep pockets that they will go after. I fully expect Vilma /NFLPA to fight to get his playing time back. Ideally, for the NFL, Vilma wins some appeal and gets some games back (NFL is set up even if Vilma loses an appeal) because I can already picture the argument. "We tried to make the game as safe as possible, we fined illegal hits, we tried to shut down bounty programs -EVERY time we did though we were fought tooth and nail by your fellow players and your Players Union.... YOUR fellow players created the environment of merciless hits that lead to your injuries, we tried to curtail it, we had your best interest at heart, but were thwarted by your union....so sue them"
I'm pretty sure that Goodell has something on Vilma and the others...it may not be enough to merit a year of sitting out, but enough to give the NFL a stirring closing argument in some court case. (my perception of this whole thing anyway...)

which is cute and all, except the NFL lied to the players about data concerning concussions. This also doesn't address the fact that more brutal, sometimes intentional, hits have had far less punishments
