pisses off the player in question

Uh, why would it piss him off? The 1st and 3rd tender probably will be enough to keep him here. Franchising him puts him in the same boat, but pays him about $4m more.

I can see why Dallas would be interested.

For the record I'm not even buying that Dallas is seriously interested. 3 years ago they gave Davis a 7 year 50 million deal.

Look for Evans to probably command something similar, and that is a lot of money tied up in your guard position.

LT Flozell Adams is looking at around 7 or 8 million for next year, and the Boys are thinking of cutting him. If they keep him that would make a very expensive O-line. If they let him go, they need to replace him, through FA, which they are restricted in and not many quality LT's out there, or the draft. Getting Evans would seriously derail their draft and finding Flozells replacement.

Same reason why most players don't like it. Whatever deal he gets, from the Cowboys, Saints, whomever, it will more than likely offer more long term security than the 1 year franchise deal.

He will probably get guaranteed money around 18 million. Almost double what a 1 year franchise deal is worth.

Example, say Evans plays more than 5 games in the state of Louisiana in any single season of the contract and the entire contract becomes guaranteed.

First of all, the league would void that offer sheet because "playing 5 games in Louisiana" is an impossibility for the Cowboys. The term and/or condition of the "poison pill" has be such that there is a possibility to acheive that term and/or condition.

Most organization create a "poison pill" involving money that would violate the salary cap for the player's existing team. Since this might be an uncapped year, the Saints aren't restricted by cap numbers...ergo, no poison pill scenario.

I still remember the eave reviews that Bill Kuharich got for crafting a clever poison pill that prevented the Colts for matching our offer to Chad Cota.

you have to lock Evans up long-term, too important to the success of our team to let him walk

I wouldn't worry about Jahri going anywhere, he came from Bloomburg...fricking BLOOMBURG. no one was gonna draft him and SP gave him a chance.

That alone would make one think he will be a life long saint.

I hope they do. Evans is a HUGE ASSet to this team in the future. He is someone we cannot let go. I expect a big deal coming for him.

Cowboys might begin the courting process for Evans really for NEXT year when he possibly won't be RFA...

That's not true. He was a 4th round pick, and was on the radar of a many teams as a prospect.

Well that's what the RFA tag is. I find it doubtful that we work out a long term deal THIS year. It'll be more likely next year after we use a franchise tag on him.

I'd like to think the Saints have done about as good as anyone in the draft the past few years. It seems like very few guys we draft don't contribute at some point...yeah it took a little longer for the controversial pick of meachem....

Because the Saints will have the ability to have Evans fairly cheaply for another year. A team would be stupid to sign him to a contract and lose a 1 and a 3. And its tough as it is to sign players long term and the Saints aren't going to want to shell out a 50 million dollar deal prematurely especially with the pending labor deal in the air.

Disagree. I don't think they are going to the risk of losing or pissing off the best guard in the NFL just to get one more cheap year of labor out of him
