Compensatory pick makes this a no lose scenario

#Saints pay heavy price for sure. But there is logic involved ...
* Super Bowl contender
* protects best asset in Brees
* price (3rd in '19) hurts, especially after trading 1st to GB, but ...
* if they don't re-sign Teddy, they'll possibly get 3rd rounder in 2020 (comp pick) ...
Plus the Jets are sending a 6th rounder to us

Now, we're getting complicated.

what if we end up signing more free agents than we lose?

Then that would mean we found some other big money QB or superstar player.

Goodell would make a bylaw and give that pick to the Jets.

We can always franchise Bridgewater if unable to get a deal done.

This dude living in 3018 while we're piddling around in 2018.

Franchising a qb would be like 25 million

Goodell doesn’t give Nola comp picks.....

You only get comp picks if you lose more FAs than you sign (not counting cut players or RFAs).
There's been maybe one or two times in the Payton era we've gotten a comp pick. Maybe if we lose Teddy we'd purposely not be active in FA, but then you're basically not doing your best to improve the team just to get a third rounder back.
It just doesn't seem worth it. The plan is clearly to retain him long term, whatever form that takes.

It’s not about numbers of players it’s about contract amounts. You can still sign good fa’s that don’t equate to the 15-20 million per year that a free agent qb may demand. Compensatory pick would definitely be in play if he leaves...not to say it’s the focus just a potential avenue of ROI

No it's 100% about the amount of players first and foremost. Just go look it up.
Then it takes other factors into account after the player for player matching has been completed.
It's the EXACT reason why we've only ever gotten one or two comp picks under Payton, because we are always extremely active in FA and usually resign or best players, leaving fringe roster guys no one else signs as our only FAs.

drafting well plays into this also, which we hadn't done much of.

I don’t think we’ve ever gotten a comp pick under Payton. Maybe we did years ago

We got one in like 2015 I believe, when we waited until after the cut off date (June 1st) to sign Goodwin (which was 2014 iirc) because we knew we were one to the good to be able to get one.
Not sure if we got one in the first 3-4 years under Payton, but I can't recall getting one (I think we got one in 2006 that turned into Colston, but that was from 2005 FA which was pre Payton).

The Basics
As explained by AdamJT13:
As the NFL explains, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire. The number of picks a team can receive equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a secret formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by the formula.
Although the formula has never been revealed, by studying the compensatory picks that have been awarded since they began in 1994, I’ve determined that the primary factor in the value of the picks awarded is the average annual value of the contract the player signed with his new team, with an adjustment for playing time and a smaller adjustment for postseason honors.
LINK
In other words the Saints would basically have to sign another free agent in the 15-20 million dollar range to cancel out the loss of a free agent that signs for 15-20 million dollars. Signings like P-Rob, Ben Watson, etc. would not be comparable players to counteract the loss of QB who signs for 15 to 20 mill on the open market. Therefore comp pick would still be applicable.

The part you highlighted is about cut players and RFAs, which I already said. They don't count.
This is the key component. You have to lose more than you gain before you start getting picks.
LINK
So if you sign as many or more than you lose, you don't get any.
The contracts and honord and whatnot only factor in once you are eligible to receive one, and then they do what's called "pairing", where they take the closest value players and cancel them out.
Then the value of the left over players determines what round pick(s) you get.
Edit:
I may have been wrong about RFAs not counting, but I was sure I read that somewhere.

All 32 NFL teams are allowed up to four compensatory picks, and they're only awarded to clubs that signed fewer players than they lost via free agency. That does not include players cut, players released after signing the year before or players making the league minimum.
