cbssports NFL Power Rankings

It's the halfway point of the NFL season, and so far it's been eight weeks filled with plenty of surprises and not too much great football.
Among the surprises:
-The Buffalo Bills were supposed to be tanking, and yet they're 5-2 heading into a brutal stretch of their schedule the next five weeks.
-The Los Angeles Rams come out of their bye tied for first place in the NFC West.
-The Minnesota Vikings lead the NFC North with their starting quarterback playing two games and Case Keenum taking over as the starter.
-The Oakland Raiders, a preseason Super Bowl pick by many, are now 3-5 heading into the second half of the season.
-The New Orleans Saints lead the NFC South and may actually have a defense. Yes, the Saints have a defense.
Will all these things stay this way as we head to the second half? Probably not, but November is a month for separating from the pack and showing growth as a team. The teams that do that will be playoff teams.
For now, the Rams, Saints, Vikings and Bills are top-10 teams in my Power Rankings. How many are still there come December? I say at least two, but you try and guess which ones it will be. In this wacky season, we really have no idea about this league. Do we?
Saints #7...Is the defense for real? It sure looks like it is for now. Dennis Allen is doing a heck of a job with that side of the ball.

I'm not willing to give him a ton of credit just yet. Jordan, Lattimore, and Crawley have made his job a lot easier. He still has some maddening playcalls that drive me up a wall. I know you have to go zone at times, but when we do I feel like we get so much less aggressive and is usually the times we give up big plays.
There were at least 3-4 times last Sunday I saw not a single defender more than about 8 yards deep and was screaming where the F is the safety help? I'm pretty sure those were all the cases we got gashed on.

Tell me more.

The Bucs at #28 have to be one of the most underachieving teams I've ever seen. They have a really talented team. Hopefully they keep stinking it up against us, but they have the players to give us a tough game. They did go into Buffalo & lose by 3 points, but then the next week they scored just 3 points against the Panthers.
They have 2 legit QB's, & look at their skill position players (that's filthy)...
QB - Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick
RB - Doug Martin, Jacquizz Rodgers
WR - Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson
TE - Cameron Brate, O.J. Howard
OL - LT Donovan Smith, LG Kevin Pamphile, OC Ali Marpet, RG JR Sweezy, RT Demar Dotson. I don't pay attention to O-Line's around the league very much, so I have no clue if they're any good or not.
That DT duo is damn good, they have talent at LB, Hargreaves is locking people down at CB, & they have 3 safeties. They must have horrible coaching, b/c they're talented enough to make the playoffs...
DT - Garald McCoy, Chris Baker
DE - Robert Ayers, William Gholston, Noah Spence is on IR
LB - LaVonte David, Kwon Alexander, Kendell Beckwith
CB - Vernon Hargreaves, Brent Grimes(he's banged up)
S - Chris Conte, T.J. Ward, Justin Evans

These two could seriously hurt us.

I'll give him a pass against the Pats & Brady. That Vikings loss is 100% on him, but the last 5 games have been nothing short of amazing.
I'm not ready to call him a great DC yet, but I'm warming up up to him. He's almost corrected every problem that held us back during weeks 1 & 2. If he can correct the big plays in the running game, & also keep up everything else we've been doing right for the last 5 games...you pretty much have to give him credit.
Even with the big runs...we're a easily top 5 defense during our 5 game winning streak.

Dirk Koetter was a decent or average college coach. Not sure what he accomplished as an OC for Tampa warranted him being handed the job.

He has been bashed for coaching a bad D. I'm sure as hell going to give him his props for coaching a good looking young as hell defense

Yep. Cameron Brate(pretty sure that we cut him) has become one of the best TE's in the NFL, & O.J. Howard probably has more potential than any TE in the NFL.
If they fire their coach in the offseason...I hope they hire a bust to replace him. A good coach will win with this roster. Especially if they have a good O-Line.

To play devil's advocate, Harris and PJ Williams played that game across Lattimore. And we played the GOAT game 2.
Now that we've started playing Lattimore and Crawley outside and Vaccaro at slot we've been a different team. I'm just saying personnel has just as much to do with the improvement than scheme IMO.

Agreed. Vaccaro has no business playing deep safety. That's kind of asking for it imo. Then the obvious Crawley over DeVante Harris has basically saved our season. PJ Williams also had a great game(@Panthers) when Lattimore was recovering from a concussion.
DeVante Harris should be on the practice squad at best. I can't believe we just left him in the game(@Vikings), when it was blatantly obvious that they were targeting him over & over. Allen has done a great job with halftime adjustments for the past 5 games, but that Vikings game has to be one of the worst defensive coaching jobs I've ever seen.

Yeah we can't take a team that talented lightly

He’s surprised the Bucs suck. dirk koetter is their coach

Defense sucks - coaches fault
Defense good - credit the personnel
Think that’s how this works
Or coaching worked to develop our young D talent. Players worked hard. Scheme took some tweaking and Allen made adjustments

Credit where it’s due. I thought Allen would be gone mid season after the way they looked in the first two games

Yep. I thought we were going to end up firing him & making Nolan the DC for the rest of the season. That was my opinion after week 2. Glad to see him turn it around.

I've never banged the drums against the coaches. In fact I've always been the one pointing out the reason our defense sucked was because of the insane rash of injuries we've constantly had and otherwise lack of personnel. We lost our entire starting dime package to start the year last year and people were surprised we were a bad pass defense? I mean cmon.

The likely NFL DROY shutting down everyone he lines up against hasn't made his job easier? Or the #1 rated DE in the league? Or Crawley now being in his 2nd year and improving.
Do people forget we were playing Sterling Moore and some dude named BW Webb last year?
Ok bro
Look at Rob Ryan in 2013. Everyone thought OMG he's finally got us a good defense again after an abysmal 2012. Guess what, we had a healthy Lewis, Greer, Vaccaro, Jenkins, and Harper in the secondary. You lose everyone but Vaccaro and all of a sudden "Rob Ryan can't coach."
It's the opposite here. We had scrubs last year and we've finally got two starting caliber CBs and three very good safeties rotating in. That's made all the difference in the world.
