meh..it is what it is.
i think we as fans extremely overrated a LT coming off of IR (i throw out the BS probowls because it seems everyone gets voted to a probowl at some point)
all we talked about was a 1st or 2nd rounder or Haynesworth. we chose to ignore the numerous times Payton said they had zero interest in Haynesworth.
also, not many players get traded for high picks, especially ones who did not play for the entire year and have a bit of an injury history.
so really we got a pick for a player who did not want to be here anymore and one that would certainly not be here next year. its really not that bad of a deal.
like i said, it is what it is. its just funny so many are freaking out about a player who did not even play a role on our SB winning team

This is such a horrible deal for the Saints. A freaking 4th rounder for a pro-bowl LT? Are you kidding me? Seriously?
Even if we get the 3rd, we got ripped off because it doesn't even depend on anything brown does. We have to default to how Washington as a team or McNabb does.
Bad deal, big time, IMO.

Brown was probably the most overrated LT in the league coming off an injury, and is a holding machine. Getting anything for him at this point was a plus.

Well, those claiming McNabb went for just a 3rd or 4th, that's the pick they get next year. I believe they also got the Redskins 2nd round pick this past draft. I'd say thats a little more than people realize.
In the end, I would've rather them traded for Mcintosh straight up for JB. That would've at least given us depth at LB while we lost depth at OL.

it takes 2 to tango, as they say
you cant trade him to someone that doesn't want him. This isnt a video game.
if you dont think the Saints explored every option to deal this guy, then i dont know what to say. The people overeacting to this trade are retarded

You think every team always takes the best deal?
I'm sure the Memphis Grizzles got the best deal possible for Gasol to the Lakers.
Sometimes teams get taken for a ride.

According to this thread Jammal Brown was a probowl LT? Huh.
Brown wasn't worth the trouble and we won't even notice that he's gone. Yeah, so the deal isn't sexy, oh well I'll get over it.
I'd rather have Bushrod, Charlie Brown and an extra pick in 2011 than an unhappy highly paid Jammal Brown

i hate Mickey Loomis, so no.
but in this case, it's obvious they wanted to get rid of him, he wanted to leave, and there weren't many suitors, if any, besides the Redskins. So they got the trade done.
I dont see what is so hard to understand.
get taken for a ride over a guy you have proved to win without? The Saints save the 3 million tender they would have to pay him this year, and are out of a disgruntled player. THere was pretty much no market for the guy. Saints got what they could so the team can move on with training camp coming up
Essentially he was a guy who missed all last year, and only has 1 year left on his deal. That's a huge risk for any team. You are basically renting him for a year before he asks for a killer contract. Not too mention the huge injury risk.

Brown has been out of football for a year.
Brown had season ending hip/hernia injuries.
Brown has been rumored to have a degenerative knee that will soon go to bone-on-bone.
Brown is a malcontent.
Brown is rumored to switch back to RT in Washington.
Brown still has only one year on left on his contract, so there's no guarantee he even stays with the Skins.
Brown won't improve the 4-12 Redskins to Super Bowl contenders. (Neither will oft-injured "I've-never-won-a-Super-Bowl" McNabb or Mike "I've-won-nothing-without-Elway" Shanahan.)
Bottomline: We could get a second 3rd rounder for our 5th pick by giving the pitiful Skins a rusty, hip& hernia-recoverin' malcontent Tackle with degenerative knees, who is switching sides in a new system, and no guarantees he doesn't bolt from the Skins after this year.
Man, did we ever get ripped.

And those are all really good reasons to not give the guy a longterm deal. But if the guy returns to his 2008 form, he is simply better than Bushrod is, so you have to consider how significant it could be to, say, have Bush running a route out of the backfield instead of having to chip Jared Allen first. We have a good chance at repeating and I think it may have been worth it to just keep him one more year than to jump up from a 6 to a 4 or a 5 to a 3.

this was a post on saintsreport that sums it up nicely
quote:
People are flipping out because they think Loomis blew a chance to get requisite value on JB. Yet what you consider to be value - is an expense item on Loomis' spreadsheet that none of us can see. You do not get to be champions by making easy decisions. On this, the management is happy with the position depth and/or the spreadsheet.
You wanted Darren Sharper back, you got him. You wanted Pierre Thomas signed and happy, you got him. You wanted Roman Harper and Lance Moore signed, you got them. But you cannot have everything.
Not hard to see, but last Monday's tender-signing deadline was a drop dead date on Loomis' watch. JB strayed, so buh-bye. We made it through last year without you. We drafted Charles Brown. We appreciate what you've done JB, but getting paid to you means more than a chance to play an important role and repeat with the Super Bowl champions.
Understand, the club is going to do things, in their way, on the fiscally conservative side. They have superstars to re-sign next year. Plus, if games are lost do to labor conflict, they will have no income during that time. This is a time that the club is helping themselves out by saving money.
You gotta toughen up. Go ahead, play out your fears...say Jammal Brown becomes a piece of a resurgent Redskin team with their vet signings on offense. Are you afraid of the Washington Redskins?
Or say Bushrod has another hiccup game like he did against Dallas. You know what? I trust the coaches. I trust Drew Brees to step up in the pocket and throw lasers down the middle of the field to Henderson and Meachem like he did last year. Or find Reggie on a middle post in stride. Or find Marques Colston on a slant. Or find Shockey for 7 yards. Or flair it out to Pierre on the comeback. Or find Jimmy Graham leaving a linebacker sucking dust.
Toughen up. Teams are going to bring their A game against us next year like not one of us has ever seen before, because we won in 2009 with major cojones.
So salute Jammal Brown, and let Mickey kick butt in excel.

zombie, something tells me this thread along with the other needs to get saved so we can see how truly "pathetic" this deal was later.
I still remember the guns to the head portion of last year's draft for trading up to get a punter. A PUNTER.
Pretty sure most, if not all of us grabbed some sort of firearm and pointed it at our heads when that was announced. Dumbest decision ever...at the time. Fast forward, and the guy plays a big part in our championship. It was a humbling experience for me, thinking of that in full circle.
So, while my first reaction was...wtf, are you kidding me, when I saw the compensation, but then thought about some of the other decisions Payton and co. have made, and I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing.
Trade up to get a punter...madness.

We'll get a 3rd round. Redskins ain't winning 9 games and McNabb ain't going to no damn Pro Bowl. He'll probably be injured after Brown leaves the DE unblocked.

Wow. I agree 100%. He played no role last year. Injury prone. We save 3 Mil.. He didn't want to sign his offer. No other team stepped forward to give up the kingdom to get him. I never heard rumor #1 of any team that was serious to get him. I never heard a comment from him in the last few months that screamed wow...team player high character guy we just can't lose. If Lester, who can't stand Loomis says it's not that bad of a deal... you can hang your hat on that. FWIW.

So, tying for the league lead in 2008 with 7 holding penalties proves that he is not a holding machine? In comparison that year, the entire New England O-Line got called for 4.
Posted on 6/20/10 at 10:54 am to TigerBait1127
People keep saying we didnt need/want him and we took what we could get. I personally agree that we dont need him. But we could have let him sit out the year, then walk for this compensation. I understand there has to be another trade partner, but damn. Plus the fact we have to send them a pick as well. And what was the rush? Teams would have become a little more desperate towards the beginning of the season. Why did we have to make this trade in mid-June? Im sure there are extenuating circumstances to which we are not privy that led to this trade. But from the outside looking in, nobody can deny we got owned in the face.
