well look at fred thomas.. he was the most solid cb on the team for a number of years including 1 probowl..

then payton took over and he was dreadful.. so we replace him with a starting superbowl cb and look what happens yet again..

solid cb play probably is about 25% safety, 25% pressure on qb.

OLB, LT, S, and RB are our biggest needs.

Yeah I forgot about T in my needs list.

If we could somehow address S and OLB and RB through free agency, the middle part of the draft is pretty chock full of quality tackles. Tackles seem to do a better job of adapting to immediate NFL game time than most other positions as well.

- Asomugha CAN be franchised again, simple as google

- Franchising him will cost Oakland 11.7 million

- With the contention between Oakland and him I think they will trade him

- IMO he is the best CB in the NFL and still getting better. He will command the largest contract by a DB in history.

- If I was gonna pay through the wazoo for any player he would be one of the few.

- I think he would cost two first round picks.

- With the newfound depth at corner we might could get him for a 1st, Randall Gay, and a lower pick.

- If the Saints could pull it off I would be impressed in the sense of making a big move happen. At the cost, we would have to see the results to judge the merit.

- Brees was a big move that paid off the biggest in franchise history. Tebucky Jones for a 2nd, 4th, & 7th was a big move that was one of the worst in franchise history.

if you have 2 good CBs you can essentially devote a S in the box as a 4th (or 5th) LB

you can stop the run by throwing more players in the area. you can't do that with running

now is a pass rush important? yes. but a good pass rush and shitty coverage means nothing either

there is no cb that I know of that can be ona island against a decent wr and hold his own. When teams bring up a safety, it is because they don't have to respect the pass game b/c the other team sucks at passing(see vikings, every team does it against them, not just ones with good cb's).

Thats more of a game to game tweak, I don't know of any teams that rely on their cb's to shut people down and then play tweener safeties ona consistant basis.

I can't think of another position that the same player can look like absolute crap or a lockdown corner from team to team.

I'm not saying you can have anyone play cb, but compared to other positions(save for maybe fb cause all they do is blow people up).

look at JD, when the safeties play properly, guy makes tons of plays, but on the flip, he also looks like a middle schooler witha crippled leg when he is isolated.

Denver did it all the time when they signed Champ Bailey. 49ers and Cowboys did it when they got D. Sanders. When the Redskins had D. Green and C. Bailey, they basically went to a 4-4-3. CB's will get burned, but the great cover corners get matched up to take on one guy all the time.

D.Sanders - is the best cb to ever play

I guess I worded this part wrong about not knowing a team that did it. I mean succesfully.

Denver has never been a decent D since baily has been there. They've been 25th in ydage and even worse on scoring or worse every year.
Redskins were good but man were they stacked on d.

FWIW I agree with you on your assessment of CB being a very overrated position. All you have to do to see the true impact position in the secondary is watch the Dolphins/Ravens game from last Saturday.

Safety is the most underrated position on the football field in high-level games. They can erase shoddy corner coverage, they can intimidate WR's from going over the middle, they can play centerfield and frick with QB's heads all day.

The Saints need a good safety.

Yes, instead of spending the money on one superstar, we will give the same amount of money to 3 average players.

I think what hes trying to say is shutdown corners don't exist anymore and I agree with that. Its mostly based on the rule changes in the NFL.

He will NEVER see the free agent market. He will either sign with the Raiders or receive a franchise tag. If he were to hit the market, his cost would be through the rough. Although the Saints would have the money to sign him (and I think we should), we have shown a propensity to not go after the most coveted and costly free agents. I say the chances that he is a Saint next year is <5%.
