Then develop him. Even if he isnt your starter, he becomes a future trade value. Ron Wolf(fmr Packers GM) instilled this view. If Shough doesn't become the starter its ok, just draft another QB next year. Developing backups is again future draft/trade capital.

If high picks are not continuously turning into strong starters then you will destroy your roster.

Bad picks in Rounds 3-6 over time destroy your roster. These are your quality backups, special teamers, and depth.

Took several drafts to recover from the crazy Ricky Williams trade.

I agree that you should always take a mid-late round flier on a QB to develop and fill out the depth with players on rookie deals to avoid having to pay out the ridiculous deals veteran backup QB’s command now.

Regularly spending early picks on QB’s will keep you picking in the top 5, though.

He does not mean with the 40th pick. 5th round sure top of the 2nd? Absolutely not

I would use a 1-3 rounder every year until you grab that elite player.

Even if you don't hit an elite player you save 40 mil a year with QB's on rookie contracts

You do need 21 other starters 1st should be definite starters even 2nd rounders a/be starters plus if you take one every year that high, how long are you giving them? If you have an established starter, like Wolf did with Farve, then you shouldn’t be taking flyers until the 4th-5th round or your 4th 5th pick anyway if you have extra picks. Gabriel was a 3rd rounder but Cleveland’s 5th pick.
