Will Smith is a life long, as well as accomplished, Saint. I'd love to see him retire a Saint. I'm just not sure how much he has left, how good he will be in a 3-4 and if he's worth paying more money too (as opposed to just cutting him). I'll trust Loomis on this one.
As for Montgomery, I'm sure the coaches are just telling the truth in a diplomatic way. Something like, " He's a great talent, but he does miss some workouts and film sessions and he loves video games more than football. But he's a good kid and does what ever you need on and off the field and works in the community. He's a good player, you just have to know he's eccentric." I'm sure they aren't running down the kid.

I really don't want Smith back. This guy on SR posted 3 videos of plays made by another poster on the site, and he just asked people to watch them and focus on Smith and defend his play.
I did, and it was ugly. He rarely gets double teamed. Junior and Tez got more double teams in those videos. One blocker usually takes him out of the play easy. He's a smart player, but he's too chubby and slow to do anything about it. We already know he sucks against the run.
And of course those figs on the site are giving him shite for it.

Interesting thought, but it would be sabotage not espionage.
Who is Dan Hope and should anyone care what he tweets?

I thought this was well known

Yeah, but these are good reminders for those saying he's still a good player. The only way I think he'd be of any value is if he dropped weight.

I think he plays hen he wants to play. In 08 he was just literally standing on the field but in 09 turns into an above average guy. I'm with you though, I want him gone. He takes alot of snaps away from younger, better players.

I have never been a fan of Will Smith due to his lack of big play performances. So many of his sacks come at times when the QB has nothing to do and is time runs out or he is pushed to Smith's side of the pocket.

I'd hope that one of the younger guys, maybe someone like Hicks would beat him out for the job if does come back. But it really wouldn't surprise me if he is a starter next year. He's better off in a 3-4 at this point in his career anyway. The total overhaul that everybody wants just doesn't seem like it is going to happen.

Only way I see him being successful in a 3-4 is at NT and he doesnt have the size or strength to play there. He definitley doesnt have the speed or cover skills to play the edge in a 3-4 so where is he at?

Yeah, I think he just got lazy and was taking the easy way out on those really wide pass rushes. If it's better for the cap to keep him than release him, I'm fine with him staying as a backup to Hicks and Jordan.

DE. He pretty much only uses the bullrush, and he played DE whenever GW used 3 man lines. He wouldn't be a terrible option for DE depth, but I think we can find someone with more experience there in FA for a similar price to whatever he restructures to.

You conveniently left out the one position that he is big enough and strong enough to play lol. You do realize there is another position where you can be smaller than a NT, and bigger and slower than an OLB?
Posted on 2/23/13 at 5:12 pm to Bduhon55
well he would be a DE (five technique). He would be lining up on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle. He isn't athletic enough to play nose tackle. Somebody like Bunkley would be though I think.

Or he could just gain 3 or 4 pounds, if he needs to gain any weight at all, and just stay at DE. That's better than dropping 20 pounds to play a position he isn't fast enough to play anyway. His speed rushing skills or gone. All he has left is his size and strength. He basically has declined into a 3-4 DE.

Exactly. Not only that, but he was moving inside to DT some last year. I think people just don't realize how big the guy is. So he already played this position some for GW, and he played some DT last year, but people don't think he fits as a 3-4 end, which again, he already played some at that spot?

If that's true, that is chicken shite by LSU. Yes we all saw that Sam was on the list for not practicing or showing up on time, etc. But on the field, Sam always played hard and gave LSU a lot.
According to PFT, Sam admitted in his combine press interview to taking plays off when he thought the opponent wasn't classy enough.
“You know, some weeks when we didn’t have to play the harder teams, there were some times when effort was not needed,” Montgomery said. “But when we had the big boys coming in, the ‘Bamas or the South Carolinas, I grabbed close to those guys and went all out." LINK
As far as W. Smith, only if he were to play for the vet minimum and only then if he can beat out everyone else vying for the de spot. And face it, some 43 team will be willing to offer him more than the minimum.
Posted on 2/23/13 at 6:22 pm to monroesaintsfan
Wouldn't they have to release him and sign him back for him to play for the vet minimum? What if it just makes more sense cap wise to restructure his contract instead of releasing him, taking the hit, then signing him back?
Posted on 2/23/13 at 6:26 pm to landrywasbeast30
Why would they have to release him? If he were to sign for the vet minimum that would be the renegotiation. Of course he would still get his guaranteed money, just like he will he if he were to go to another team or be cut and retire for that matter.

They need to work on a Will Smith cut
Posted on 2/23/13 at 9:29 pm to monroesaintsfan
That makes more sense than what I said. I'm not an expert on the way the cap works, but is it even possible to drop his salary all the way down to vet minimum? I was just assuming they were looking at a way to make his salary work better than the hit they would take from releasing him. Never crossed my mind that they could ask him to drop his salary that much while paying the rest in guaranteed money.
