They'll have a TON of cap space, well below the salary floor even if they max out Hayward

They're sitting in a pretty good situation. If they max Gordon and get the first pick in the draft, they will still have over $20 million in cap space. Roughly $22 million of space with a $15/year for Hayward and $5.5/year for 1st overall pick. Swapping Gordon + 1st for Kanter would still leave them with $13 million in space, and their roster would look pretty good.

Guards: Burke, Burks, Gordon
Forwards: Hayward, Parker/Wiggins, Evans
Big Guys: Favors, Gobert
Space: Upwards of $10 million
Picks (ETA): Two 1st round picks in 2014, 2015, 2017

Would be a pretty solid roster IMO.

Wear and tear and single coverage were the implications.

And Utah is definitely a team that will lose out in the FA signings other than keeping Hayward. $10 million in cap space with Gordon = $25 million without Gordon and nothing to do with that cap space but eat other team's bad contracts for picks. Would the fans be happy with using cap space on another Biedrins? At least Gordon can actually play at a solid starter level (when healthy).

I said this yesterday in regards to Detroit, but having upwards of $20 million in the bank this summer isn't necessarily a good thing for the less appealing destinations and a weak summer FA class. To me, that situation screams bad contract offers waiting to happen.

I hadn't thought about Utah being a potential home for EG, but I think that trade actually helps them more than it helps us. After maxing Hayward, the Jazz won't have any contracts to extend until EG's contract expires. Seems like a pretty good situation to take on a relatively "bad contract."

Now you fellas are thinking..

The answer at center for us is Kanter. He would get along with and grow tremendously with this team. He's cheap (enough), young, fits the mold of our front office (guys who have already been through the rigors of the early stages of the NBA) and he HASN'T REACHED HIS POTENTIAL YET.

That's the key…NOLA must take flyers/chances/ on players who haven't reached their peak just yet (yes, Im assuming he gets better with more minutes = optimistic) to pair with our already established lineup of Jrue, Reke, Anderson, and AD.

He's who we should target and we'd be in the mix.

I am trying to think from Utah's point of view. They are in good shape cap wise, and this trade would keep them under/around the cap. The Nuggets might say no thanks to this proposal, but it puts them in a better financial situation.

Jazz: E. Gordon, K. Faried
Pelicans: E. Kanter, W. Chandler
Nuggets: Babbitt, P. Jackson, NOP 2015 1st

Jazz would probably only take this trade if they landed a top 3 pick. Their lineup would be pretty awesome, though.

Guards: Burke, EG, Burks
Wings: Hayward, Jabari/Wiggins, Evans
Big Guys: Favors, Faried, Gobert

I don't see any holes in that roster, and Utah won't need money to extend their young players until EG is off of the books.

You're probably right.

I have a hard time determining the value of Faried and Wilson Chandler, though. Denver has Gallo locked up for a few years, barring injury, which makes Chandler expendable. His PER is in the 13 range, and he's on a $7 million per year contract. Not exactly the best contract, but he's a great role player.

There were rumors Denver and NY discussing a Faried / Schumpert swap before the trade deadline, which makes me think Faried's offensive numbers are flashier than his true value.

Shaving $8-9 million plus collecting a 1st round pick might be appealing to them, but I agree, they still probably say no.

He's an RFA, might not even need to trade anybody. Pels have $8.87 million coming off the cap if they don't resign Smith or Aminu & Stiemsma gone. You don't think that's enough to lure Monroe back to the Big Easy?
Further, Drummond will be due a fat pay day (extension) a year from now. Do you really think they are going to splurge on Monroe AND Drummond? Especially considering the $14mil locked up in Josh Smith? Monroe's as good as gone imo...

Would he be OK playing full time center?

I'd like Monroe next to AD or Anderson. Both pairings would be dynamic and kill teams offensively. Wing defense be damned, Tyreke can handle anybody.

I don't think the numbers work like this. Once you reach the cap, you can still sign guys with Bird rights, etc. We are over the cap right now, just not over the tax line.

Gordon, Evans, Holiday, Anderson, Davis, Rivers combine for $53.7 next season. If you pick up Morrow's option and add in the minimum roster holds, you are sitting around $57 million. Projected cap is $63 million, so we would have around $6 million to offer. He will get more than $6 million this summer.

Edit: But yeah, I'd like to have him here

If we knew Detroit wouldn't match, and that Monroe would choose to come here even with other offers / more money available, we could choose not to pick up AR's team option. Morrow would have to opt out in this scenario, but we could still offer him a room level exception contract, I believe.

Gordon, Evans, Holiday, Anderson, Davis, and 6 minimum roster holds would put us around $54.7. We could offer Monroe around $8.5, then sign Morrow with an exception.

Holiday, Jackson
Evans, Gordon, Morrow
Babbitt, Miller
AD, Anderson
Monroe, Withey, Ajinca

That front court is crowded, and if AD/Ryno make for a bad defensive lineup, Monroe/Anderson would be atrocious.

Anyways, it won't happen. We will pick up AR's team option. Monroe will likely get offers well over $8.5/year. And I don't think ShamelessPel would approve of letting Rivers go.

$8.87 million isn't even in the ballpark of what it would take to sign Monroe, I don't care what type of hometown discount you think you would get.

You're thinking he'll get 11.5 mil or something?

He might get the max. There are limited Top Tier FAs on the market and there was a cash injection of $150 million into a situation where cap space was already going to exceed talent available.

I'm thinking he will get a max deal and the Pistons will work out a sign-and-trade.
