What option would you take?

Option 1: Have the Pels in their current situation record wise, with a failure coach, and AD maybe out the door.

Option 2: DeMarcus Cousins making his return tonight on the Pels playing his first game of a brand new max contract. With AD pumped up about the possibility of the potential of this team going forward and likely resigning.

Hindsight obviously 20/20 but I’m taking option 2 even with the possibility DMCs Achilles doesn’t hold up. It just further proves the statement that the NBA is a league about stars and if you have a chance to get a star you get one no matter the situation. We could’ve had 2 stars locked up together for about 4 years from now

Sucks how it has shaken out, but at the time, most pels fans thought we made the right choice regarding boogie

ETA: if Boogie signed a max contract with us, he wouldn't be returning now. He's already been paid. With the Warriors he's still trying to get paid.

I wouldnt have gave him a full 5 year max, but a 2 year max would've been ok in hindsight..

Even if he has to take a full season off to rehab, you can still sell AD on him having a superstar returning next season, and at this point in the season you could try a tank for a higher pick, although I think with Boogie even on the bench we are in a better spot than we are now.

I was/am in love with buddy and I'm not giving a first round and buddy for a one season rental.

Once you mortgage your first you better go all in on cousins though. Should have offered max, as you stated. option b.

I accept that after a huge man does Achilles injury you "can/should" resist making any long or large offer. It's a big gamble. But after you paid with first and buddy I think you ought to shoot for the moon and offer max money on deal same length as AD. warriors did not pay much for essentially half season. They had another center they were happy with before Jones injury.

The disadvantage that the Pelicans had is that any offer they made was 'disrespectful' to Cousins. Yet, the Warriors get to come in with 1 year/5 mil and they 'totally believe in him!'

There is often a disadvantage to having Bird Rights on a player. They know what you can offer them and anything less than the top of what you are allowed to offer is seen as disrespect and not believing in a player.

If options were 4 years at near max salary or letting it play out the way it did, I'd let him walk.

I don't like Cousins, but B was the way to go. I just wouldn't let assets walk, without getting something in return. It would be a huge risk, but in a season or two Cousins could be traded and then you get something back. Losing two 1st rounders for him is crippling right now..

Yea the reason I said he would have a brand new max contract is because it’s pretty much certain he would get his feeling hurt if he didn’t get that. But at this point I think I’m ok with him getting the max. Even ok if he got the max and sat out the entire sesson.

Only positive we may have from DMC leaving in this situation is we will likely get rid of Demps/Gentry sooner than if DMC had stayed.... at least I would hope
