The Pels are really moving the ball with Zion

They've been top 5ish most of the season with around 26 assists per game. In the last 11 games they are first with 31.2 APG. Everyone was worried about how would a starting lineup with Lonzo/Jrue/Favors create space for Zion, but Zion is creating space for everyone else and the team is doing a great job of getting the ball to the open man.

They just need to get the ball more to Zion. Less iso and more Zion please. Good things always happen when he touches the ball. Like they usually score more because a slam dunk is a higher percentage shot than a fall away contested shot which seems to be the alternative shot of it’s not Zion.

YTD assists per game
1. Memphis Grizzlies 27.2
2. Phoenix Suns 26.9
3. New Orleans Pelicans 26.6
4. Denver Nuggets 26.4
5. Los Angeles Lakers 26.2
pels make 42 FGs/game; thats an assist rate of .63, which is outstanding considering all the iso they were running early in the year for ingram

which iso's were you most disappointed with in the last game?

It’s different every game, but it’s always the “usual suspects”. Ingram, Jrue, etc. last game it was Ingram by far.

yeah we should get rid of those two guys

Didn’t say that at all. Zion is just barely touching his ability. I see guys taking hard contested iso 3s that have probably less than 30% chance of going in instead of throwing it into Zion in good position where he will have a 70-80% chance of scoring (he’s getting more and more efficient if not there yet) and it drives me crazy.

Oh an god forbid if you are a guard on the team and manage to get a rebound you can only pass once and immediately a contested three point shot has to go up rather than running any kind of play at all much less a high percentage one involving Zion.

Are you joking? The shot selection on this team is shite.

Numbers-wise, the Pels aren’t necessarily moving the ball that much more with Zion, but they are moving it more effectively. The Pels were already top 1 or 2 in the league with lowest numbers of dribbles per touch and shortest time per touch. Each of those numbers have gone even lower with Zion, but statistically, the difference is negligible.
What has really changed is the Pels have been converting their passes into buckets at a much higher rate. The assists are up since Zion came back, but it’s the the Ast% for FGM that is truly telling. It’s up over 6%, with over 68% of the FGM have been assisted since Zion’s return. A lot of this has to do with Zion already being a near elite finisher, but his gravity also has a noticeable effect on the team.

Having Jrue, Ingram and Zion on the court at once has caused this issue to flare up in the past. However I think Gentry has gotten a message through to the team to feed Zion. So it may not be as big of an issue in the future.

no, no it’s not.
I’m heading to get a beer and get out of this rain so I’ll let other quote the relevant stats to you
or...you could even try educating yourself.
just know that you could not possibly be less right in your observations. The “shot selection” by the pels as they run their sets is quite good, and well above league average in effeciency and expected points per shot

Earlier in the season for probably more than half of Lonzo's shots I thought "You're supposed to be a point guard with amazing vision. How could you possibly think your step back 3 early in the shot clock was the best shot the team could get on that possession?" Now I only ask myself that for about 20% of Lonzo's shots.
In time everyone will adjust to Zion, especially if he's taking on the Alpha role like it sounds.

only thing worse than their shot selection is their defense which is god awful. They have almost no clue how to make it uncomfortable for the opponents to score. Almost feels like they a playing in a “practice” game and don’t want to hurt anyone. When they get to the playoffs they are in for a huge awakening.

Also, as far as your other posts, if you can't see how beautiful the ball movement has been recently, you're either lying to yourself, or you're just blind

Made those gsw scrubs look like Curry, Klay and Durant in the first half.

Oh I see that ball movement, that’s all good, when they aren’t in iso ball mode I should add. I expect that at this point. That’s the bare minimum. But they still aren’t close to maximizing the edge they “could” have with Zion out there.
