Help me understand how this would work. Knicks have seven first in next five years. Five of their own and two from the Mavericks which are unprotected I believe? Nba rules state a team can only trade four of their own so Im guessing pels would ask for.

2019 first-- Rj Barret
Mavs 2020 unprotected
Mavs 2021 Unprotected
Knicks 2021 first.. likely back end of first.
Could we ask for more first? Just trying to understand the picks part of this trade.

The rule is that they cannot trade consecutive future picks, but there is some wiggle room.

1. They could convey the 3 pick on draft night after they take it, which means they could then trade 2020 picks without an issue.

2. The rule is you have to have a pick every two years in the future, not that it has to be yours. The Knicks could theoretically trade their own picks for the next few years and retain the Mavs’ picks, but that wouldn’t work for a trade because the Mavs’ picks are more valuable than those of the Knicks.

Part of the problem of any future pick trade is that you are gambling heavily on what that team will look like down the line.

It worked out for Boston with the Nets because they correctly guessed that the team would bottom out as Pierce and Garnett aged.

It didn’t work out so well for the Magic in the Chris Webber trade but that was a combination of bad picks and weird luck for both them and the Warriors. (In particular, they blew a pick in 1996 that could have been one of about five star players such as Kobe or Peja for a guy off the team within 2 seasons)

2 are not theirs, so Mavs picks have nothing to do with them. We could ask for 2019, 2021, 2023, etc

True, I also believe the rules are you cannot trade past 7 years.

This is why some think 4 1st are the most you can trade.

Which is true if you do not have other teams picks.

The Mavs picks they got for KP are 2021 (unprotected) and 2023 (1-10 protected).

The couldn't get 2020 and 2021 from the Mavs because those are in consecutive years.
