And I'll bet that Navy and Gold are the predominate colors.
Even though navy was just a replacement for black?

Well what I'm saying is. That's NATIONAL. Everybody thinks its gonna be pelicans now. If they were doing it just to gauge public perception, that seems like a bad PR move, to have to backtrack like that.
Although nothing's final and it's all rumors, so I guess it doesn't really matter anyway

Benson should go to the fans and give them 3 names (preferably: Pelicans, Brass, Krewe) and tell them to go to FOX8's website and vote for your favorite and least favorite.
One poll you ask which they'd want. The other poll you ask which they definitely don't want. Eliminate the name that is most hated and least liked. If you aren't left with one name, then look at the results and pick which one looks to be more loved than hated by the most people.
I think Brass will come back as your winner with Pelicans in second.

Yeah, that replacement thing gets overlooked alot, and I feel it's important. It can be retrofitted into the city flag, etc. but to me it says:
discussions have been going rather than just planning, since there was at least some sort of two-way communication
the colors have been nearly locked in, since they had been changed before and it's unlikely they'd spill the beans on thing that still may change
the nickname is decided, since it'd be really odd to choose a color scheme then ram a nickname into it

They're not really backtracking. The media outlets were the ones reporting it. The only thing the Benson camp did was deny that it was the final selection. The media runs with rumors all the time, so this situation wouldn't be any different if the name was something besides Pelicans.

Should? Why?

They don't need to backtrack. Keeping the rumor at arm's distance through Yahoo gives them a level of deniability.

We'll see. I'm really skeptical. Red, Gold, and Navy is painfully generic. I'd be more likely to just wear a random red, navy, or gold shirt.
Agree, I think they need to use the mardi Gras colors. Just two of the three at once
Purple and yellow home, green and yellow away. Or something like that

Let the fans have a say in naming their team.

Good point. It's also possible that they had multiple logos planned out for any choice they would come up with and the color scheme was something they'd make fit. Red, Gold, and Navy just doesn't seem like a selection of colors that you'd choose for a name like Pelicans.
ETA: And the fact that the colors match what's on the New Orleans state flag could also show that it didn't really matter what the mascot or logo was going to be.

They do it all the time.. Press release that says "this rumor is NOT true"

There could definitely be significant benefit to giving the fans a little more "ownership" over the team by choosing a name. It's not uncommon in sports.

It's also possible that red black and gold was shot down long ago. And since then, they decided to go with the flag colors.
It's not like they just decided to pick navy as a last second replacement to black

Well yeah, that's the obvious way to do it smartly... Benson probably doesn't know you can do online polls

Has there even been any more mention of the colors since Gayle let that slip? I know the NBA denied.

since the original color choices did not include the city flag's colors, this seems to be not true.
i do it expect a retcon.
