The NBA has awarded New Orleans a $2.75M disabled player exception for injured C Alexis Ajinca, league source tells ESPN.

So this gives us $2.75M in room under the hard cap? Or no?

Why can't we get this for Asik? He has been hurt for so long and he his HORRIBLE. Taking up a substantial amount of cap room. He if were gone we could go out and sign a decent 3

No. Unless they plan to make a trade where they send more money out it's practically useless with how close they are to the tax. But they applied for it so they can see a situation in which having this would be useful. It's not just for signing guys, it can also be used to claim players off the waiver wire or trade for expiring players.

Don't confuse the Disabled Player exception with the salary cap relief teams sometimes receive after losing a player to a career-ending injury or death (see question number 61). The Disabled Player exception allows a team to acquire a replacement player.

Hard cap and luxury tax restrictions will present a challenge for New Orleans with the $2.75M Alexis Ajinca Disability Player Exception. The Pelicans are $706K below the tax and $1.29M below the hard cap. New Orleans would need to clear salary and a roster spot to use.

This sounds like a due diligence move just in case some other moves happen. The deadline for applying for this just passed on the 15th, so if they wanted it they needed to get it now.
