What did they do well last season and what did they need to work on this offseason to make a positive jump this season? (notice the word "positive" Dan my Man).

Fears:
His explosiveness and ability to get to the rim is elite, especially when he pushes the pace. He's not Westbrook athleticism elite as in flying through the air, but not many guys are, but his speed, quickness and ability to finish at that speed is elite, and he needs to use it more.
I would like to see a more concerted effort from him to grab defensive rebounds and take off starting the fast break.
Only Flagg averaged more drives to the rim than Fears last year among rookies, and Fears was up there with most average guards in drives per game. The downside was he was only scoring 52% of the time on his 10 drives per game. The better guys are scoring over 60% of the time. Maxey was at 74%, and even his rookie year he was at 72%. Hoping he takes a leap here. I think Maxey is a really good comparison for Fears b/c they are very similar in size and athletic ability.

I think the biggest leap he can take is knocking down 3's. To me, he can be what Tyrese Maxey is. Maxey struggled a bit in his first year but started picking it up in the second half of the year, and he jumped from taking under two 3's a game at 30% in his rookie season to taking 4 a game in year 2 at 42%. Fears shot 33% on just under 4 a game this year. First step is knocking down C&S 3's at a higher rate. He was 33% from both C&S and pull ups. I don't mind the 33% on pull ups, but the C&S needs to be closer to 40%, especially with his ability to cause havoc off the dribble in the paint if he's run off the line. But if you can't knock down C&S 3's at a higher rate, no one is going to run you off the line.

I think one of Fears best abilities is his fitness, and that's an ability that can be underrated. But if you don't use this ability, then what's the point of having it. Fears is never going to be the best halfcourt defender b/c of his size. He's going to get picked on when the game matters. I think one of the best things he can do is pick up guys full court and make them work to get the ball up the court and start their offense later in the shot clock. ORTG goes down significantly the later in the shot clock teams start their offense. I think that's a big way he can make an impact defensively.

Queen:
First thing i hope he worked on this offseason was his lateral quickness. I think he has the ability to be quicker, and this would go a long way as a defensive player on the perimeter.

I want to see more of a David West type role for him offensively where he operates from the elbows. He can knock down that shot and his ability to get to the rim and finish was really good last year. Only 5.8 drives per game, but he scored 76% of the time, which was the best among qualified rookies. Zion causes a bit of an issue in helping create space, but hopefully they can figure something out with him off the ball and how to counter against his man helping. I would think having Queen on the elbow with Trey in that same corner and Zion in the opposite short corner is an ideal setup. Hopefully our new coach has a plan for DQ and Zion when they are on the court together.
DQ only had 1.4 elbow touches per game, but scored on 68% of them, which is where guys like AD and KAT are around, and is really good.
He needs more elbow touches.
I think that is more important than him knocking down 3's, but he still needs to be able to extend his range and knock down top of the key 3's like you see from Jokic/KAT/Embiid/AD There's no reason for him to be anywhere else on the court but within the lane up to the top of the key. I do'nt want to see him on the wing or corner. He should be hovering around the elbows and top of the key for the majority of the offensive possessions.

I do think people underestimate his defense. I think with the right guys around him, he can be better than average as a big defender, both at the rim and on the perimeter.
His DFG% from less than 5' was 65%. Teams did attack him though. Only 15 guys in the league had more attempts per game on them than DQ, and all of those guys that had those high attempts were around that 65% (AD, Embiid, Jokic, Claxton, Gobert, Bam, Mobley none of which were under 60%) Overall he was at 48%, which really is a pretty good number. Not elite, but better than average. DQ was also in the top 1/3 in the league overall as a defender in isolation and on post ups. Pick and rolls were his downfall as he was around the 44 percentile (bottom half). He was actually pretty good defending the 3 as well, holding guys to 32% shooting from 3.
I think the ability is there. The stats back up that he can be a good defender. The first game of the season against Wemby i thought he held his own against him. Just a bit more lateral quickness and adjustments to the speed of the game and i think he'll be just fine defensively, as long as we are game planning correctly and have the right guys around him.. The individual stats show he's a better defender the Missi.
A lineup with Fears/Murray/Trey/DQ and then either Herb or Bey should be a good defensive lineup. If we are making an effort to pick up full court and slow teams down and make them operate later in the shot clock, then we can be a really good defensive team. Good defense also starts with a good offense. Bad 3's and turnovers lead to easy transition buckets.

DQ's best 5 man lineups had Trey/Herb/Bey in them, and either Fears or Jose.
They guys he did the best with this past year were Herb and Karlo, and Karlo's defensive stats are a lot more impressive than you'd think, much better than Missi. Karlo needs more minutes this year.
Fears best lineups had Zion in them.

It will be interesting to see how Murray integrates with Fears and Queen. Murray was a big positive the limited time he played this year, but his worst lineups by far were with Fears and Queen. They were actually the only 2 guys he had a negative NRTG with on the team, by a very wide margin. You'd think Fears and Murray would have worked really well together. Obviously it wasn't a lot of time together so hoping this was just end of season junk that didn't matter much.

I think the biggest job our new coach has in front of him is how to make it work with Fears/DQ and Zion/Murray. Trey, Herb and Bey work well with any lineup, so how we integrate those 4 will be interesting to see. Since we did nothing this offseason, I hope the plan is to see how it goes with everyone healthy and make decisions at the trade deadline if necessary moving out the piece or pieces that don't work with the core group of the future.

Fears is also the youngest player in the NBA to score 35pts in 3 consecutive games and the youngest player in NBA history to have a 40 pt game.

I agree with the Fears assessment. He HAS to finish better at the rim and he HAS to shoot more 3s. Those are non negotiable.

Queen either has to shoot 3s or somehow become a good defender. If he can’t do one of those things then he’s just not a starter in the NBA. I do not believe he can become a good defender, I just think he’s too small for the 5 and too slow for the 4. I do have hope he can develop a 3 though, he’s got soft touch and shoots well from FT. I just think building around him is a mistake because much like Zion it takes a perfect team construction to maximize him

I think the beauty of this season is that they don't necessarily have to make it work, they can simply see who fits and who doesn't. We have heard many rumors about Trey/ Herb/ Zion the last few months.

I'm not sure anyone is safe past Queen/ Fears. Maybe Murray fits and Truy/ Zion get moved, maybe Trey/ Zion stay and we make a move with Herb/ Murray.

Adding a true SG to pair with these guys would also decrease the 3pt need. We don't necessarily need Fears to shoot more 3's if he avg 5+ assist to a guy putting up 20-30ppg at a high clip.

Add a 3pt shooter, get Queen to perfect his mid range, and turn Fears into a Kyrie type playmaker even if his 3pt isn't as polished.

We need a C and a SG.

As I said, Trey/Herb/Bey fit with any lineup. What they do translates no matter who's on the floor with them, and they all influence winning in a positive way.

That is why i think it's stupid to trade any of them. Regardless of who else is on the floor, they will work well with them.
t's Zion and Queen that don't necessarily work well with everyone, and they didn't work well together at all. Hopefully they are seeing which path to take going forward with the two of them, either the new coach with a healthy Murray can make Queen and Zion work, or they can't, which means one of them has to get moved.

Disagree. Every single successful small guard in the league is putting up 7+ 3PAs. Brunson, Maxey, Mitchell, Jamal Murray. Small guards have to be good 3pt shooters in today’s NBA. It’s not up for debate

Except I specifically named Kyrie who is not only better than all those dudes but also averages 2.4 3PA a year for his career. He's also arguably the most comparable guard to Fears. Now he's also a 39-40% 3pt shooter with the low attempts so that matters. (Fact check: Incorrect)

Fears doesn't have to shoot more than 3-4 3's but you sure as shite needs to do it at a good clip.

Assuming no changes or only acquiring future picks then I agree. I'm still not against trading those guys if it lands us the best single prospect to pair with Queen/ Fears.

If we plan to draft a SG next year, have Bey/ Herb, and are getting killed in the paint then yeah a Trey for Duren type move makes a lot of sense.

I would almost rather do something like that than spend assets for a Myles Turner just to go from a play-in team to a 6-7 seed.

He's 250lbs. He's not too small. There's only a handful of players in the league that are a good bit bigger than him, and outside of Jokic and Embiid, none of them really matter b/c they aren't good enough offensively to make a difference to him.
He's a similar size to Bam, and almost all of the defensive stats i posted were better than Bam.

DQ and Karlo actually had really good minutes together. I think Karlo's athleticism and size help DQ out a lot. I've always said good rim protection starts with good perimeter defense (unless your someone like Wemby or Gobert and then it doesn't really matter).

Here were the best 5 man lineups that had somewhat significant time together.
Alvarado/Herb/Bey/Trey/DQ +24.4
Fears/Herb/Trey/Zion/Missi +21.4
Fears/Herb/Bey/Zion/Missi +17.7
Fears/Herb/Bey/Trey/DQ +11
Fears/Bey/Trey/Karlo/DQ +9.8
Murray//Herb/Bey/Trey/Zion +9.8
Zion/Herb/Bey/Trey/Missi +7.2

This is why it would be stupid to trade Trey/Herb/Bey, assuming you're interested in winning. Almost every winning lineup we put out there consisted of Fears with at least 2 of Trey/Herb/Bey and then either Zion or DQ.
That lineup i bolded above is the key lineup to me, and was the 3rd most played lineup last year so it's not a small sample size. It's also a lineup that had a defensive rating of 107.3, which would be the 2nd best defense in the league behind OKC last year.
The Fears/Bey/Trey/Karlo/DQ lineup had a 102.9 DRtg.

So YES, DQ can be a good defender, with the right supporting cast.

You cannot compare him to Kyrie, a hall of famer who has one of the best handles of all time and is one of the best finishers at the rim for a small guard of all time.

I agree that Fears doesn't need to go shooting 8+ 3's a game, but he's got to stay in the 5-6 range at least, while also becoming a better a finisher at the rim.

You have your numbers wrong. Kyrie averages 2.4 MADE 3s for his career. He averages 6.1 3PAs for his career and hasn’t averaged under 7 3PAs since 19/20

sure, as long as that guy is a wing who can defend and score at an above average clip, meaning he's an all-star b/c if you're upgrading Trey, it better be for an all-star wing.

Who we plan on drafting next year has nothing to do with what should be doing at any point this year until next years draft.

I'll say it again, good rim protection starts with good perimeter defense (unless your Wemby or Gobert)
There's a reason the Celtics were a great defensive team with a 5 who could barely jump over a piece of paper in Horford. It's b/c when you have Jrue/White/Tatum/Brown guarding the perimeter it's going to be extremely difficult to get an open lane to the rim.

And DQ's defensive stats were very similar to Duren's, and better in some cases. If there's a 5 we are looking to add to play with DQ, it needs to be a tall rim protector who can also create space offensively with his 3 point shooting, like a prime Brook Lopez (although playing with Giannis makes everyone look a lot better defensively)

You can 100% compare him to Kyrie in regards to his playstyle, handles, and shiftiness. Obviously the HOF stats and career of Kyrie is a tall mountain to climb.

I still think you can get away with 4-6 3pt for Fears with a good clip and a real SG to take off the pressure.

You cannot though. Fears has to become a high volume efficient shooter from 3 as a small guard. It would make roster construction even harder when it’s already going to be hard enough trying to build around Queen. If Queen and Fears are your core and they neither of them are volume 3 point shooters then you need your 3 other starters to not only be efficient, high volume shooters, they also need to be extremely good defenders to cover for Queen and Fears. Basically you need to surround them with 3 unicorns

Fears/Herb/Bey/Trey/DQ
+11 NtRtg
107.3 DRtg (would be 2nd best in league)

Fears
High volume 3pt shooter/ Herb
Trey/ Bey
Queen
Defensive center

A paint protecting C and a SG does more for this than you'd think. All you are really asking for is this future SG to be a 2 way player. You already have Bey/ Trey 3pt and Herb defense. Add another guy to do both and its not far from what you are asking.

Is your defensive center shooting 3s? Because if not you’re getting like 5 3PAs combined from 3/5 of your starters in Fears, Queen, and the center. That’s not a tenable offense in today’s NBA. It’s the same problem we had with the BI/Zion pels. Those teams were awful closing games because between Zion, BI and whatever center we closed with we didn’t have enough shooting on the floor and the offense crumbled

Queen/ Fears averaged 4.8 3PA last year. They can easily make that 6-8 combined.

Yes this isn't great when Herb Jones is your other starter. That's really problem #1. Herb is a bench player and a game finisher, he is not a starter.

Replace Herb with another +38% SG taking 8+ 3's a game and boom.

Herb shot 4.6 3pg on 30% last year. Replace him with a real shooting guard and that issue already disappears. Replace him with a 2 way player of that caliber and the sky is the limit.

Herb is just as much an issue as Zion is.
Both of them are elite at what they do, but the lack of 3 point shooting really makes things difficult.

We have assets to make a big move for the right guy. Between Zion, Murray, Herb and picks, you can get the ideal wing player to fit with Fears/Trey/Bey/DQ. The problem is I have no idea who is realistically available we could go after. Scouring through teams the best I could come up with is Norman Powell, who just signed with the Bulls. Maybe there's a chance moving Herb to Denver for Cam Johnson but other moves would need to happen to make that work financially. And neither of those guys are really what we are looking for. There really aren't any true 2 way wings, one that could be a difference maker, as in an allstar level player, that are realistically available right now.
