Dude it was 15pt game at one point in the 4th. That’s 5 possessions. Not worth it to pull them.

Exactly. I’m not proposing pulling them w/ 5 min left. Houston definitely could’ve made a run. But under 3:00 min up 20-22?? I’d wager there has NEVER been a lead that large blown.

And while cutting a few minutes here and there is certainly beneficial, we’ve seen over the years AD is susceptible to getting dinged up. Why risk it when the game is well in hand?

Because there is not one goal in a game. There are multiple goals.

I know fans think very simplistically and think its only about winning and the second the win (or loss) is guaranteed, you pull everyone and go home. But coaches have multiple goals, including getting guys in shape. Also, building chemistry and giving them experience in closing out games.

Again, I know its too complex for the average fan, but you guys want an answer - that is the real answer. You will probably disagree but Pop, Phil Jackson and all the greats do/did the same thing. Watch the next Spurs game when they are up or down 20. You'll probably be shocked how long he keeps them in for.

But I mean is that really hard to see? If you have a new team or in the beginning of the season the main goal is to build chemistry with your core. Also, if you’re up by 20 you can test things with your core players to see what works and what doesn’t. That way you can have other options for in game adjustments.

Also, another thing that happens is trying or exploring new options to throw off analytics. Bill Belicheck is known for doing this. He will blitz or throw the ball deep to throw off statistics. That’s why you keep your core in the game for awhile.

For me it's more that as a New Orleans fan, I'm thinking of potential injuries. So you want to pull your guys as soon as a game is decided. Everytime I see Ad rebound in traffic I'm hoping he just lands on the ground.

Your points make sense though, and I think against a lesser team they would empty the bench sooner as well.

You serious Crewz? No doubt you know your stuff, but Pops ROUTINELY pulled starters with plenty of time in games to make a run. Hell, I was at the game a few years back and I was pissed b/c I couldn’t watch Manu, Duncan & Parker more b/c they sat the whole 4th Q.

And this average fan gets what you are saying about multiple goals, But pray tell what goals are accomplished between 3:00 left in the game up 20 and 1:30 left up 20.

All I know is, all of our goals turn into a big fat steamer if AD blows out a knee in garbage time. My point is, the risk outweighs the rewards.

As far as the Spurs argument, Pop pulled those guys early because they were 1) played together with each other for seasons and postseasons and 2) were older players. They were on restricted minutes because they played a lot together and needed to save energy for the postseason.

No, Pop has pulled starters down 20 because there have been several times where his second unit actually gets them back in the game.

Look, you can believe what you want. But your argument is fear based. You are worrying about what negative things could happen by playing them extra minutes. Some people think of the positive things that can come from it.

Unless you think that Gentry just forgot to pull them out. Obviously he had a reason. Also, did you notice Harden and others were out there as well? If D'Antoni an idiot too?

All these coaches are dumb. If only they were as smart as the random message board poster!

Not saying I’m right and y’all are wrong. I believe both points are valid. I’m probably jaded as an LSU football fan and remember Matt Mauck succumbing to a season ender in ‘02, Ben Wilkerson in ‘04 (I think) & Jacob Phillips this year against Ole Miss up 30 w/ 1:00 min left. Boogie’s injury last year just stirred those echoes.

Like it was said earlier, hopefully we won’t have to see AD & Jrue logging 40+ min each over the next few home games.
