Honestly don't know, but aren't trade backs in the NBA pretty rare?

Yes, but you know what else is rare? 4 teams having 3 1sts each and another having 2. 5 teams have nearly 50% of the 1st round picks. Another rarity is a team drafting in the 2nd Tier of the draft for need/fit rather than BPA. When those 2 factors meet I don't find it hard to believe that they'll trade back if Dunn and Hield are off the board.

I guess my question is, if the guys we think are worth taking at 6 are off the board, what team pays to move up? And for who?

TOR or DEN for Murray or PHX for Brown are the only options I see. TOR at 9 seems solid, but Dell would have to be sure Valentine was there at 13 or 15 to make the other moves. If he bones the draft by trading back and then misses his lone target, ice gets that much thinner.

I think a lot has to do with how much Denver values PF vs. Guard. They just drafted their PG of the future in Mudiay, so that would seem to rule out Dunn. Wilson Chandler can play SG, and Barton and Harris played pretty well for them last year, so I can see them having more interest in Chriss/Bender than Hield/Murray. If that's true then Toronto can't wait until 9 if it wants a Tier 2 big. Would Ellenson and #27 be better for them than Bender or Chriss? And if Toronto is ready to trade up then you get to see how much Denver values a 2nd pick in the late teens.

Why would Denver trade up for Murray? They have to think we wouldn't take him if we truly passed up 2018 1sts for Ryno. I suppose it fits the situation I just outlined for the bigs if Toronto is planning on not keeping DeRozan.

Trade up from 15 not 7. Grab Murray at 6 and Ellenson at 7. There is no reason for Denver to trade in front of us otherwise.

I could see TOR wanting Murray as a hedge against Derozan leaving and a scorer off the bench which energizes the fan base. However Masai is a super smart guy and will probably just sit tight, draft a PF at 9 and then another at 28 to stash in Europe.

I think the problem with this is that none of the highly projected PF's are ready to contribute in a way that TOR needs so I don't see them trading up for one. Why move up for Chriss if he is a developmental guy? Plus I don't trust Dell to trade with Masai.

Why would you ever trade back in the NBA???

there can be advantages, but I agree with your point. Trading out of the lottery is dumb.
