That's what coaching IS. If you're married to a system, you're just an ideologue.

So basically they want randomness or "freelancing" most of the time,

Sounds like Doug Moe's old Denver Nuggets offense.

it doesn't exactly shock me that we come out the gate slowly season after season and the same issues seem to pop up.

They started last year 4-0 with an incredible net rating.

Ha. Weird how this thread has turned...when the offense continues to be really good, even though it is more demanding than it should be, you now can't separate offense from defense.

It can't just be that the defense sucks, it's now the offense being too good. This was dumb on the rant for the Tigers, it's dumb now.

This is all sort of interesting, but utter conjecture. Rather than just looking at a roster that is new and injury depleted and young, you are grafting wild, unsupported theories about player mental energy exertion to explain why they are losing. I'm not sure why everyone assumes playing fast is something players don't want to do or that running slow, precise sets in the half court is any less of a mental stress.

Gentry aint a particularly good coach, but what's he's doing isn't some outlandish way of coaching or as demanding as any coach in the league (I think Pop or Spo or Carlisle would like to have a word).

My conspiracy theory: Pels fans talked themselves into this team and the players on the roster being better than it ever was going to be. Now that they have stumbled a bit, fans are grasping for any explanation.

This OP is kind of embarrassing. Not sure why we’re acting like “freelance” means that there is no system.

Let’s go back to Byron calling a set play 35 times a game and using 22 seconds of every shot clock? frick that.
