Nah—Herbs defense to start the season was way off from last year. He was fouling like crazy as well. He’s started to pick it up but he started off bad

The front foot offset is like a lot of things, it’s ok in moderation,
It’s natural, and something that all great shooters do.
The only two I can think of that are more squared up are Klay and Ray Allen. And you still see them finish with that slight turn.

there is a reason most good free throw shooters are squared up on the line.
No one any good does that. See Klay below.
Good shooters are great at squaring up their shoulders when they shoot, but as they rise up they start to turn away from the strong hand so that their shooting arm can go perfectly straight up.
It’s natural for any good shooter to so this, and have that foot slightly forward.
Herb is maybe getting it out in front too much, but there’s nothing wrong with having the strong side foot slightly ahead of the other.
And Herb is more stepping forward to shoot as opposed to just shooting from it being slightly in front. He’s stepping into the shot with that foot, which is not what is typical with any good shooter.

He’s been getting extremely shitty calls all season.

Don't disagree with any of that, although I would still say the best shooters are more squared up and shooting through their core, although the best are just so consistent even when off axis which is so impressive.
Herb has looked better at times and also really awkward and loose at times.
BUT ALSO SOMETIMES LOOKS LIKE THIS...

Herb’s shot looks flat coming out of his hands.

I think what he’s doing is when he brings the ball up it doesn’t go straight up in a vertical line. It sort of comes up from out in front of him and then up right above his head, so it sort of swings back, then he shoots it forward, which is why it looks flat so often.

Even though he is struggling atm, I can see him as the type of player that will work on his shot even more than he is currently and improve as his career goes on. Plus basketball players go through poor shooting streaks, he could just be in one currently. Not to mention he has only played one nba season. Let’s wait n see before writing off his offensive game.
