And that's what I was basically getting at with the last paragraph. If you trade AD and get the 1st or 2nd pick, you go safer with your own pick at 7.

But if I have Jrue and Tatum - both good players but neither is going to be "the guy" on a great team IMO, then I swing for the fences, personally. There is just no other way to get a stud in New Orleans, other than drafting for one. I can find ways to get PJ Tucker, DeMarre Carroll, or PJ Brown level players (which is how I project guys like DeAndre Hunter and B Clarke)

Right. If I already have a star or two I want the high chance of a solid player to solidify my roster.

If I have no stars then I’m swinging for the fences every chance I get.

When you are valuating that risk, it kind of depends on what your alternatives are.

In hindsight, given the shite in the 2013 draft, it seems a lot easier to say “Yeah, we probably should have taken a risk on Giannis.”

What about, say, the Pistons drafting second in 2004? They could have had any talent they wanted but LeBron, such as Bosh or Wade, and they ended up getting Darko Milicic because they wanted a big like him and were drooling over him once the lottery happened and they realized the Grizzlies’ pick conveyed at second.

That was just poor evaluation. Nobody in the world watched Carmelo in the NCAA tourney and saw anything but a guy who would be an All Star every year in his prime. Wade was a god that final year at Marquette, and Bosh had star upside too.

The better analogy would be something like Darko vs Nick Collison. Collison was going to be a good role player in every scenario. But there is no scenario in which he could have been a star. Darko had the tools to have a chance at being a star if every single thing broke right. But in many cases, he was going to bust.

Jrue isn't a star?

Star as in Harden, Giannis, Curry, KD, Kawhi, etc, etc -- no he isn't. He is a quasi All Star level player a top 15-25 guy. And thats great. But if you wanna really contend, you need a guy who is gonna make All Star and All NBA every year, without question and who is at least in occasional, if not frequent, MVP discussions

Jrue was named all d once so far and all nba once.

At his best he is a difference maker that carries the load. Some games just the d.
You need two or three more like that to win it all.

Reminds of Sloan.
